PREP ROUNDUP : Vazquez Leads Barons’ Upset of Santa Margarita

Joey Vazquez, The Times player of the year in 1994-95, scored two goals to help Fountain Valley upset top-ranked Santa Margarita, 2-1, in a nonleague boys’ soccer game Wednesday at Santa Margarita.

The Barons (4-1), ranked ninth in the county, took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Vazquez headed Chris Jones’ free kick into the net. Vazquez made it 2-0 on a breakaway goal early in the second half.

Santa Margarita (6-2) answered when Brian Piesner beat several defenders and scored 15 minutes later.

In other nonleague boys’ soccer:

El Toro 1, Trabuco Hills 1--Trabuco Hills’ Scott Martino scored the tying goal on a penalty kick with one minute remaining. Fourth-ranked El Toro (6-1-2) had taken a 1-0 lead when Andy Valderrama scored in the 63rd minute.

St. Margaret’s 3, San Diego Army-Navy Academy 1--Patrick Moss and James Harris scored in the second half for St. Margaret’s (2-3-1) to break a 1-1 tie.

Whittier Christian 13, Southern California Christian 0--Josh Elwood scored four goals and Kyle Hedwall had three for Whittier Christian (5-2).

In the first round of the Brea Olinda Rotary boys’ soccer tournament:

Brea Olinda 3, Savanna 2--John Paul Ugay scored the game-winner in the 76th minute for Brea Olinda (2-0-2). Savanna’s Julio Palacios scored his second goal in the 60th minute to tie it, 2-2. Brian Yezarski scored two first-half goals for Brea.

Servite 4, Pasadena Muir 0--Sean Murphy posted his third consecutive shutout, recording 12 saves for Servite (3-3).

Sunny Hills 3, Baldwin Park 0--Andy Volpp had a goal and an assist for Sunny Hills (3-1-1), which led, 2-0, at halftime.

In the Bolsa Grande Lady Matador girls’ basketball tournament:

Capistrano Valley 56, Huntington Beach 53--With 53 seconds remaining, Natasha Combs (25 points) had a steal and a layup to give Capistrano Valley a 54-53 lead. Then Mary Anderson made two free throws with seven seconds remaining to seal the quarterfinal victory for the Cougars (5-1).

Renee Kimoto had 16 points for Huntington Beach (5-2).

Newport Harbor 52, Magnolia 33--Mandy Clayton scored 16 points to lead 10th-ranked Newport Harbor (6-0) in the quarterfinals. Andrea Picchi had 16 for Magnolia (3-3).

San Clemente 74, Tustin 29--Kelly Kruger had 16 points and eight steals for San Clemente (3-5) in a consolation game.

In the Brethren Christian girls’ basketball tournament:

Santa Margarita 47, Calvary Chapel 33--Carlie Willard had 15 points and 15 rebounds for Santa Margarita (4-3) in a semifinal.

In the Estancia girls’ basketball tournament:

Corona del Mar 60, Pacifica 57--Melissa Ford scored 24 points, including four three-pointers, for Corona del Mar (8-1), which advanced to the championship to play Estancia at 7:45 p.m. tonight.

Estancia 48, Irvine 19--Jessica Waltz had 15 points, seven rebounds and seven steals for Estancia (7-0).

Aliso Niguel 48, Saddleback 33--Brooke Hyman scored 13 points and Mary Earnest had 14 rebounds for Aliso Niguel (4-3), which led, 27-7, at halftime.

In pool play of the Gary Raya Coed Classic girls’ basketball tournament:

Downey 84, Sunny Hills 12--Rhonda Smith scored 46 points, breaking a school record for Downey (4-2).

El Dorado 66, Canyon 36--Heather Cunningham scored 25 points for eighth-ranked El Dorado. Erin O’Neill had 19 points, including four three-pointers, for Canyon.

In the La Quinta girls’ basketball tournament:

Troy 48, La Quinta 47--With two seconds remaining and La Quinta trailing by two points, a technical foul was called on Troy’s Heidi Hardeman. But La Quinta’s Patricia Raines made only one of the two free throws and Troy held on.

Hardeman had 12 points for Troy. Tina Shum scored 23 points for La Quinta.

In the Cypress Marie Upton girls’ basketball tournament:

Katella 41, Los Amigos 36--Mandy Vanderburg scored 15 points for Katella, which will play Garden Grove in the consolation final Friday.

Garden Grove 46, Kennedy 43--April Boose made two free throws with 24 seconds remaining to secure the victory for Garden Grove (3-2).

Gina Huizar scored a game-high 16 points for the Argonauts.

Western 56, Downey Warren 40--Nancy Herrera scored 16 and Adrian Ratajzcak added 12 for Western, which will play for fifth place.

In the Vista girls’ basketball tournament:

University 73, Del Mar Torrey Pines 58--Lyz Day scored 23 points, including seven three-pointers, Monique Mathews had 19 points and 13 rebounds and Raschelle Lawrence had 15 assists for University (4-1).

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

Fairmont 61, Bethel Baptist 18--Katy Barstow had 28 points and 17 rebounds for host Fairmont (2-4).
