ROUNDUP : Second Goal Proves Devine in Westlake’s 2-1 Victory

Chris Devine of Westlake High scored two goals, including the game-winner with 10 minutes left, to lead the Warriors to a 2-1 victory over Simi Valley in a Marmonte League boys’ soccer opener Wednesday at Westlake.

Devine’s first goal came on a header off a corner kick and gave the Warriors (2-0-1) a 1-0 lead midway through the first half.

Simi Valley (2-1-2) tied the score, 1-1, midway through the second half on a goal by Craig Chelius, but Devine’s second goal gave Westlake its final margin of victory.

Palmdale 4, Pasadena 3--Goalkeeper Jarrod Cline scored on a penalty shot and then stopped Pasadena’s ensuing shot to help the Falcons (8-0-2) advance to the final of the La Canada tournament. Murad Dibbin, Merrick Henry and Enrique Flores scored for Palmdale.

Alemany 3, Harvard-Westlake 2--John Macdonald scored two goals to lead the Indians (2-3-1) to victory in a Mission League opener at Harvard-Westlake (5-2-1).

Macdonald has seven goals for Alemany this season. Julio Archila also scored for Alemany.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Burroughs 58, Glendale 57--Jorge Sotomayor’s three-point basket with two seconds remaining gave the host Indians (4-1) the nonleague victory.

Tega Moceanu had 17 points for Burroughs, and Glenn Adriatico added six of his 10 points in the fourth quarter.

Channel Islands 75, Newbury Park 68--Andres Garcia had 26 points for the Raiders (6-1, 1-0) in a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park. Channel Islands overcame a 25-10 first-quarter deficit.

Quartz Hill 44, Poly 43--Robert Beeson buried an 18-foot jump shot at the buzzer for two of his seven points to give the Rebels (4-4) the victory in pool play of the Crescenta Valley tournament.

Crescenta Valley 56, San Gabriel 48--Nathan Sinning scored 21 points and Michael Greco added 13 for the host Falcons (6-1) in pool play of the Crescenta Valley tournament.

Reseda 88, Valley Alternative 50--Joe DiSevillo came off the bench to score 21 points for the victorious Regents (2-3) in pool play of the Crescenta Valley tournament.

Villanova Prep 93, Cornerstone Christian 47--Junior guard Matt LaVere had a career-high 38 points, and added 12 rebounds and five steals for host Villanova Prep (2-2, 2-2) in a Condor League game.

Van Nuys 97, Hamilton 80--Senior Onaje Longmire had 23 points and six steals as the Wolves (1-2) defeated host Hamilton.

Royal 74, Agoura 66--Senior Marques Pena led the Highlanders (6-2, 1-0) with 27 points and 11 assists in a Marmonte League overtime win against the host Chargers (3-3, 0-1). Ryan Nielsen added 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Agoura’s Brian Laibow had 20 points and hit a three-pointer with three seconds left to force the overtime.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

La Canada 57, Flintridge Sacred Heart 46--Becca Jones had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the host Spartans (4-2) in a nonleague game.

Van Nuys 74, Hamilton 39--Lynne Berry had 19 points and 16 rebounds and Gohar Tumanian added 17 points and 15 rebounds for host Van Nuys (1-1) in a nonconference game.

Monroe 51, Granada Hills 32--Pilar Montez had 20 points, six assists and eight steals for host Monroe in a nonconference game.
