BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Mayberry Gets His 300th Victory at Kennedy

Kennedy Coach John Mayberry recorded his 300th victory at the school as the Fighting Irish overcame a four-point halftime deficit and defeated Paramount, 62-57, in a consolation game of the Irvine World News boys’ basketball tournament Friday at Irvine High.

Mayberry’s record is 300-158 in 18 years as varsity coach at Kennedy.

The Fighting Irish narrowed Paramount’s lead to one after three quarters and then outscored the visitors, 14-8, in the final quarter.

Kevin Reese scored 19 points for Kennedy (3-5) and Jacob Kunz added 16, including four three-pointers.

In the semifinals of the tournament:

Santa Ana Valley 76, Irvine 62--Ike Harmon scored a game-high 29 points and Jason Parrott added 19 for Santa Ana Valley, which advanced to the championship game. Guard Olujimi Mann scored only three points while playing despite a sprained ankle. He sat out the entire second half.

Woodbridge 69, Compton 64--Tied, 47-47, at the end of the third quarter, Woodbridge outscored Compton by four points in the final quarter to win. Chris Burgess had a game-high 29 points for the Warriors, who play Santa Ana Valley or Irvine for the championship at 5:30 p.m. today at Concordia.

In a consolation game of the tournament:

Pomona 93, University 89--University hit 19 three-pointers, but the Trojans were unable to come away with the victory. Ryan Schachter hit seven three-pointers, to lead University (4-4) with 23 points. Nathan Scoggin scored 22 on five three-pointers and Mahdi Aslampur added 14 points on four three-pointers. Eric Palmer had 12 assists and three points.

In the Gary Raya tournament:

Canyon 43, Downey 27--Canyon outscored Downey, 25-12, in the second half to advance to today’s final against Corona. Jeff Llewellyn and William Byrd each scored 12 points for Canyon (7-1).

In the Murrieta Valley tournament:

San Clemente 50, San Diego San Marcos 43 (OT)--Semaj Johnson made five free throws in overtime to lead San Clemente (5-3) in a consolation game. Ian Tatala scored 20 points and had 16 rebounds for San Clemente.

In the Sonora boys’ basketball tournament:

Sonora 65, Century 55--Josh Lien scored 13 points and Jeff Berokoff added 11, advancing Sonora (7-2) to the finals against Tustin. Hector Beltran led Century (6-3) with 15 points. Century will play Long Beach Millikan for third place.

Tustin 65, Long Beach Millikan 50--David Lalazarian scored 33 points to help Tustin (6-3) advance to the championship game. Robert Griffin added 18 points for the Tillers.

Tustin led by one at halftime and outscored Millikan, 39-25, in the second half.

In the Troy tournament:

Cypress 82, Cerritos Valley Christian 43--Chad Boberg scored 26 points to become Cypress’ all-time scoring leader with 929 career points. Boberg passed Dave Belshe, who played at Cypress from 1977-81.

Wes Bun added 16 points and 10 assists for Cypress (6-1).

Troy 62, Pacifica 50--Troy made 17 of 17 attempts from the free-throw line. Freshman Gary Inzunza scored 19 points for the Warriors (5-4), who will play Buena Park for third place today.

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

Mission Viejo 56, Laguna Beach 53--The Artists rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit, but Mission Viejo (10-0) was able to hold on for the victory. Gabe Burt scored 20 points and had seven rebounds for the Diablos. Donald Williams added 12 points and eight rebounds and Commander King had eight assists and three points. Shaun Murphy led the Diablos in rebounding with 14.

For Laguna Beach (6-3), Enver Soobzokov scored 15 points, including three three-pointers.
