Anthony Carter scored 44 points, one short of the Saddleback single-game record, to lead the Gauchos past Southwestern, 92-91, in a nonconference men’s basketball game Friday in Chula Vista.

The Gauchos (9-2) took a 92-90 lead when Michael Riggins made one of two foul shots with eight seconds remaining in the game. Southwestern’s Sedrick Bagby was fouled with three seconds remaining and made the front half of a one-and-one, but missed the second and Saddleback got possession.

Carter, a sophomore guard, made 14 of 15 free throws. Kevin Magee holds the Saddleback single-game scoring record with 45 against Santa Ana College in the 1979-80 season.
