Terry Shea, offensive coordinator and associate head coach under Bill Walsh at Stanford from 1992-94, was given a five-year contract by Rutgers and told to resurrect a program that has had only four winning seasons in the last 15 years. The deal includes a $150,000 base salary and $150,000 in additional compensation the first year.

Shea, 49, replaces Doug Graber, who was fired Nov. 28 after posting a 29-36-1 record in six seasons, including a 4-7 mark this season when most expected the team to end a bowl drought that has lasted since 1978.

In his only two years of head coaching experience, Shea guided San Jose State to a 9-2-1 record and an appearance in the California Raisin Bowl in 1990. The Spartans were 6-4-1 in his second season, sharing the Big West Conference championship.

Marcus “Tex” Montgomery, a senior linebacker for Iowa, has been charged with assaulting an ex-girlfriend.

According to Johnson County court records, Montgomery, 25, punched the woman several times, dragged her down a flight of stairs and kicked her several times in the university’s chemistry building.

Montgomery has been free since his arrest Dec. 4 after posting $650 bond. He was ordered by the court not to have any further contact with the woman, who was not identified.

The incident apparently will not prevent Montgomery from accompanying the team to El Paso for the Sun Bowl on Dec. 29.
