Fires Damage Homes in Studio City and Tarzana, Killing Pets

Two homes, in Studio City and Tarzana, were damaged and several pets were killed in separate fires late Friday and early Saturday, Los Angeles fire officials said.

In Studio City, a toddler playing with a fireplace lighter started a fire that destroyed much of the home Saturday morning.

Three pet birds and a dog were killed in the blaze, which swept through a 6,000-square-foot home on Sunswept Drive at about 11 a.m., said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

The couple who owned the home and their 3-year-old son--who set the home’s draperies afire with the lighter--were not injured.

Firefighters were able to save the family’s Christmas presents, however, Humphrey said.

In Tarzana, Hanukkah candles caused a fire that destroyed the kitchen, living room and dining room of a home Friday night.

The candles, which traditionally are left to burn each night of Hanukkah and are not blown out, set fire to unknown materials in the kitchen of the one-story home on Geyser Avenue, Humphrey said.

No one was injured in the fire, but three pet birds died and there was $120,000 worth of damage to the house and its contents, Humphrey said.
