A cigarette discarded in a trash can was the likely cause of a Monday evening fire that gutted a mobile home and sent one of its residents to the hospital suffering minor smoke inhalation, an Orange County Fire Authority spokesman said.

Fire officials estimate the blaze caused $40,000 damage to the double-wide mobile home on Ridge Route Drive. More than a dozen firefighters needed about 15 minutes to control the fire.

An unidentified elderly woman who had been smoking was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo and was later released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The other two occupants, a 52-year-old man and his 84-year-old father, were sent to an area hotel by the Red Cross and will be given food and shelter through Wednesday, said Kari Garcia, a spokeswoman for the Orange County chapter of the American Red Cross.
