HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Hoover Knocks Off Edison in Estancia Tournament

Mark Hull scored 20 points to lead the Hoover High boys’ basketball team to a 60-57 victory over defending champion Huntington Beach Edison in a first-round game of the Estancia tournament in Costa Mesa on Tuesday.

Eric Jenkins, who had 12 points, made a three-point basket to give the Tornadoes (5-4) their first lead, 29-27, late in the second quarter. He made five of six free throws in the last two minutes of the game to secure the victory.

Brian Slusser had 14 points and Chris Gibson added 11 for Edison (6-4).

Simi Valley 81, Littlerock 40--Pero Vasiljevic had 29 points and nine rebounds for the Pioneers in the first round of the Hart tournament.

Simi Valley (7-1) jumped to a 47-23 halftime lead. Ronnie Noel added nine assists for the Pioneers.

Dwight Hester scored 11 points for Littlerock (3-6).

Highland 96, Bakersfield West 50--John Burrell had 32 points and five rebounds, and Mike Fawcett came off the bench to add 13 points, six steals and six assists for the Bulldogs (6-5) in the Hart tournament.

Beverly Hills 52, Glendale 45--The Normans jumped to a 17-4 first-quarter lead in the Hart tournament. Arman Apikov led Glendale (3-8) with 23 points and nine rebounds. Guard Steve Avetyan, Glendale’s leading scorer, was held to four points and did not play in the second half because of the flu.

North Hollywood 59, Atwater 55--Shannon Johnson had 25 points and 13 rebounds for the Huskies (3-7) in the Hart tournament. Melvin Goodman added 14 points for North Hollywood.

Crescenta Valley 74, Oregon City 54--Nathan Sinning had 27 points and 10 rebounds and Mike Greco added 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Falcons (10-2) in a first-round game of the St. Louis tournament in Honolulu.

Jake Willis had 13 points and 11 assists for Crescenta Valley, but he left the game in the fourth quarter with a injured left wrist after being fouled on a layup attempt.

Cathedral 66, Montclair Prep 58--The Mounties (9-3) used a late first-half run to take a two-point halftime lead, but were outscored, 37-27, in the second half of a first-round game in the La Salle tournament.

Anwawn Jones had 21 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocked shots for Montclair Prep. Keith Johnson added 10 points and seven steals.

Santa Clara 52, Laguna Hills 50--Senior guard Lukman Dodson led the Saints (8-2) with 22 points in a first-round game of the Orange tournament.

Seniors Adam Lopez and Brian Doyle each added 10 points.

Santa Clara led, 24-16, at halftime, but missed six free throws in the fourth quarter. Laguna Beach pulled within two before time expired.

St. Francis 98, North Torrance 95--Junior Anthony Johnson had 26 points and 12 rebounds for the Golden Knights (5-6), who won in overtime in the first round of the Brea-Olinda tournament.

Anton Cunningham had 23 points and Luis Segura added 21 for St. Francis, which scored the first seven points of overtime. North Torrance is 8-4.

Long Beach Poly 72, Burbank 55--Don Allado had 11 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Bulldogs (4-6) in a first-round game in the Artesia tournament.

El Modena 78, Hueneme 51--Ronney Jenkins had 12 points and Jerome Phillips added 10, but Hueneme (2-5) committed 21 turnovers in a first-round game of the Century tournament.

Jeff Ochoa had 19 points and George Gurrola added 15 for El Modena.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Palmdale 48, Stockdale 37--Casey Bledsoe paced the Falcons (6-1) with 13 points in a first-round game in the Thousand Oaks tournament. Edniesha Curry added 11 points.

Sarah Sadler had 10 points for the Mustangs.

Hart 49, Basic (Nev.) 31--Junior center Candace Boller had 18 points to lead the Indians (6-5) in the Thousand Oaks tournament. Boller, the team’s leading scorer, bettered her 15 points-per-game average and was the only Hart player to score in double figures.

Hart played lackluster ball in the first half but managed a 22-15 lead at halftime and outscored Basic, 16-7, in the third quarter.

Teresa Ramirez led Basic with 12 points.

Santa Barbara 66, Camarillo 35--Amanda Svenson had 21 points and Doreen Richardson added 19 to lead the Dons in the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Kristin Whorley and Melissa Bonds each scored eight points for the Scorpions.

Bakersfield South 40, Oxnard 35--Senior Shari Rogers had 10 points for Oxnard (3-4) in the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Anica Rimm and Nicole Black (10 rebounds) each added eight points for the Yellowjackets. Danielle Curtis had four points and 13 rebounds for Oxnard.

Fillmore 68, Blair 46--April Kozar had 30 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots, and Christie Rosenblad added 11 points, 12 assists and eight steals for the Flashes (10-1) in a first-round game in the Bell-Jeff tournament.

Julie Arundell had 16 points for Fillmore.

Blair fell to 4-8.

North Hollywood 67, Rosamond 25--Liset Maya and Stephanie Wasserman each scored 12 points, and Samantha Fargeon added 10 for the Huskies (5-3) in the Bell-Jeff tournament.

No player scored in double figures for Rosamond (4-5).

St. Mary’s 38, Oak Park 36--Natalie Davis’ 22-point effort was not enough for Oak Park (3-8) in the Bell-Jeff tournament. St. Mary’s improved to 7-4.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Simi Valley 2, San Dimas 0--Chris Harris and Sean Herrity each scored for the Pioneers (8-2-3) in a quarterfinal match of the San Dimas tournament.

In a first-round game earlier in the day, Harris had two goals in a 4-1 Simi Valley victory over Pomona.
