COLLEGE FOOTBALL SPOTLIGHT : HE’S NOT KOY, BUT HE’S NO DETRIMENT

John Hessler, Colorado’s sophomore quarterback, had quite a season for someone who did not expect to play much. He took over in the Buffaloes’ fourth game when starter Koy Detmer suffered a season-ending knee injury and led the team to a 10-2 season.

But he expects to be relegated to second string next season with Detmer back.

“The quarterbacks are close enough friends to know how it is,” Coach Rick Neuheisel said. “We’re going to go with the best player.”

Hessler, who completed 11 of 26 passes for 115 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the 38-6 Cotton Bowl victory over Oregon, seems to understand.

“I’m curious to see what will happen,” he said. “My playing will be limited, but I don’t think I’m a terrible player.”
