Bechtold’s Goal Lifts Mater Dei

Greg Bechtold scored an unassisted goal late in the second half to give Mater Dei a 3-2 victory over El Toro in nonleague boys’ soccer Wednesday at Mater Dei.

Tied at the end of the first half following scores by Mater Dei’s Bret Corbin and El Toro’s Ron Davis, the Monarchs came out with a quick score by Walter Camargo.

El Toro, however, countered with its own goal by Andy Valderrama to keep the score tied until Bechtold’s score.

Doug Allen and Jeff McKeever combined for nine saves for Mater Dei (11-3-1).

In other nonleague games:

Aliso Niguel 1, Mission Viejo 0--Matt Frankos scored both goals for Aliso Niguel (4-5-1).

Capistrano Valley 3, Brea Olinda 0--Jason Farr had two assists for host Capistrano Valley (2-6-3).

Century 4, Costa Mesa 0--Johnny Villafana scored two and Jaime Vasquez and Edger Garrido had one each for Century (8-2), which led, 1-0, at the half.

Corona del Mar 3, Ocean View 1--Chris Strong, Matt Hoyt and Josh Weinstein scored goals for Corona del Mar (6-5-2), which led, 2-0, at the half.

Orange 3, Sonora 0--Alex Garcia scored in the first half for Orange and teammates Nick Becerra and Alex Zaldivar got their goals in the second half. Orange is 8-3-2.

Santa Ana Valley 1, Artesia 0--Ernesto Barragan made the winning goal on an assist by Luis Mejia, who recorded his 14th of the season.

Sunny Hills 2, Walnut 2--Bobby Montes scored twice for host Sunny Hills (6-4-4).

Westminster 4, Fountain Valley 3--Leo Gimenez scored on a penalty kick for Westminster with five minutes left to upset eighth-ranked Fountain Valley (8-4).

David Kurien, Ben Butteling and Aaron Rodriquez scored for Westminster. Manuel Tapia, Westminster’s leading scorer, had two assists.

Whittier Christian 1, Pasadena Poly 1--Kyle Hedwall hooked his free kick around the Pasadena Poly wall with 15 minutes remaining to tie the score for Whittier Christian (7-4-2).

It was the 19th goal of the season for Hedwall.

Woodbridge 2, University 0--Yigal Kerszenbaum scored the game-winning goal for sixth-ranked Woodbridge (9-2-2), off an assist from Jeff Jensen.

Daniel Chun sealed the victory with an assist from Shane Johnson in the second half.

Christian Bradley had 10 saves for University.

In a Garden Grove League boys’ game:

Santiago 8, Garden Grove 1--Erik Bautista and Raul Ruiz scored three goals each and Albert Mendez had three assists for 10th-ranked Santiago (10-1, 1-0).
