Plaza’s Pin Clinches Trabuco Hills’ Victory

Trabuco Hills’ Jeff Plaza was trailing by three points when he pinned Mike Papac at the five-minute mark in the 189-pound division to clinch the Mustangs’ 37-36 victory over Mater Dei in a South Coast League wrestling match Thursday at Trabuco Hills.
Kyle Young also earned important points for Trabuco Hills (9-6, 1-0) when he scored an 11-2 major decision at 130 pounds and Craig Dalen won a 5-3 overtime decision at 135 pounds for Trabuco Hills.
In the Century League:
Orange 46, Foothill 19--Gabi Martinez and Mario Mendoza each recorded first-period pins for Orange (10-1, 1-0). In the 119-pound division, Martinez pinned Brad Root in 27 seconds; Mendoza pinned Steve Rodriguez in 25 seconds in the 130-pound division.
In the Garden Grove League:
Santiago 54, Garden Grove 16--Ed Sanchez pinned Garden Grove’s Liet Tran in 16 seconds at 130 pounds for Santiago (1-0). Teammate Isreal Sanchez defeated Daniel Delatorre, 18-2, at 125 pounds.
In the Golden West League:
Santa Ana 68, Ocean View 6--Fourth-ranked Santa Ana (8-1, 1-0) received pins from Carlos Joaquin (140), Octavio Olivares (152) and Jacob LaRoche (189).
In the Orange League:
Anaheim 65, Valencia 10--Mike Slach won by technical fall, 15-0, to lead fifth-ranked Anaheim (17-2, 1-0) in the opening match of league play. Brothers Robert and Ruben Droughns won by pin for the Colonists.
In the Sunset League:
Esperanza 62, Huntington Beach 9--Brett Sheffield (125), Devon Pluski (130) and Brian Singer (135) had the first of eight pins for third-ranked Esperanza in the league opener.
