No. 3 Esperanza Edges Huntington Beach by 3

Esperanza, ranked third in the county, escaped with a 49-46 victory over unranked Huntington Beach in a Sunset League boys’ basketball game at Huntington Beach High Friday.

Chris Omer made two free throws with seven seconds left to provide the margin of victory for the Aztecs (15-2, 1-0). Josh Greer led Esperanza with 23 points.

Matt Jones scored 19 points for Huntington Beach (3-12, 0-1), which led after three quarters, 35-34.

In other Sunset League games:

Fountain Valley 65, Marina 61--Ben Rogers made a baseline jumper with a minute remaining to give Fountain Valley (8-8, 1-0) a three-point lead. Nathan Strange scored 14 points for the Barons.

Los Alamitos 59, Edison 50--The sixth-ranked Griffins trailed, 37-33, after three quarters, but used their full-court press to spark a rally in the fourth quarter. A.D. Lamoureux scored 11 of his 22 points and Los Alamitos (12-4, 1-0) made 13 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Brian Slusser had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Edison (9-7, 0-1).

In the Century League:

Orange 55, Foothill 38--Holman Paz scored 12 points and had seven assists for Orange (8-6, 1-0).

Santa Ana Valley 79, El Modena 46--Tim Werdel scored 18 points, Jason Parrott had 16 points and Olujimi Mann finished with 11 points and 10 assists for Santa Ana Valley (8-6, 1-0).

Villa Park 54, Canyon 29--Mark Saukkola scored 15 points for host Villa Park (12-3, 1-0).

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park 64, La Habra 37--Towan Oliver scored 18 of his 27 points in the second half for Buena Park (11-6, 1-0), which outscored La Habra (5-11, 0-1), 41-16, after halftime.

Fullerton 59, Troy 56--Corey Schoonover scored 16 points for Fullerton (9-7, 1-0).

Sonora 43, Sunny Hills 39--Jeff Berokoff scored 17 points for Sonora (12-5, 1-0). Sean Granillo scored 15 points for Sunny Hills (7-10, 0-1).

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 58, Los Amigos 42--Todd Butt scored 20 points for host La Quinta. Chris Francis had 16 points for Los Amigos.

In the Olympic League:

Calvary Chapel 85, Ontario Christian 61--Garid Beeler scored 19 points for Calvary Chapel (12-4, 1-0). Teammate Kevin Falconer scored 16 points and had nine assists for the Eagles.

Whittier Christian 52, Cerritos Valley Christian 48--Valley Christian had the ball with 30 seconds remaining, trailing by four points, but was unable to get any closer. Brad Smith scored 18 points for Whittier Christian (4-13, 1-0).

Orange Lutheran 62, Brethren Christian 59--Kyle Salyer scored 28 points and Jason Kemner added 19 for Orange Lutheran (5-9, 1-0), which made seven of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter. Mike Legaspi scored 18 points for Brethren Christian (3-7, 0-1).

In the Pacific Coast league:

Aliso Niguel 59, Laguna Hills 49--Jason Mulkay scored 20 points for Aliso Niguel (9-7, 1-0), which led by 10 at halftime.

Estancia 91, University 74--Ben Novak and Brandon Casillas each scored 23 points for visiting Estancia (14-3, 1-0), which played without leading scorer Chris Candlish, who has pneumonia. Nima Adloo scored 21 points for University (7-9, 0-1).

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 78, Trabuco Hills 55--Randy Shepard scored 18 points and Dan Galvanoni scored seven of his 17 points in the first quarter when Capistrano Valley (10-8, 1-0) took a 24-9 lead.

Mater Dei 87, Dana Hills 50--The Monarchs made all 17 free throws to win their 17th consecutive game. Kevin Augustine scored 22 points and Mike Vukovich added 19 points and 11 rebounds for Mater Dei (17-1, 1-0).

Jeff Barnett scored 20 points, including six three-pointers, for Dana Hills (10-7, 0-1).

San Clemente 47, Mission Viejo 43--Eli Engle scored 17 points for San Clemente (11-6, 1-0), which defeated ninth-ranked Mission Viejo (14-4, 0-1).

In nonleague games:

Brea Olinda 77, El Dorado 60--John Heredia scored 16 points to lead Brea Olinda (14-2) in nonleague play. Sean Wink and Shawn Collier each scored 15 points for the Wildcats.

Cypress 48, Western 32--Chad Boberg scored 23 points for visiting Cypress (12-3).

In Garden Grove League girls’ basketball:

Bolsa Grande 43, Garden Grove 27--Jana James had 18 points and 16 rebounds for visiting Bolsa Grande (6-6, 1-1), which held Garden Grove (6-5, 1-1) to one point in the third quarter.

Pacifica 47, Rancho Alamitos 40--Heather Green scored a career-high 32 points for Pacifica, which led, 30-18, at halftime. Araceli Hernandez scored 14 points for Rancho Alamitos (3-11, 1-1)
