PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : Losing Sharpe Tongue Helped Packers

Share

It was Rip Sterling Sharpe Day in Green Bay on Thursday.

Packer quarterback Brett Favre and receiver Anthony Morgan trashed their former Pro Bowl teammate for selfishness, elaborating on comments that they have been making during the season.

“No one on this team promotes themselves, nobody tries to separate themselves,” Favre said. “Sterling did so much to alienate himself from his team, and that caused some problems that even leaked over to the defense.

“It’s hard to form chemistry when that happens.”

Said Morgan: “It’s no longer ‘me, me, me,’ in the huddle. Now it’s ‘us, us, us.’ Last year, having Sterling in the huddle, it was so loud: ‘I need to do this. They got a 43 front.’ Now you got 11 guys that look at each other and say, ‘Togetherness.’ ”

How big are the Packers in Green Bay? As big as you would expect NFL players to be in a high-school sized town.

Mark Chmura, a tight end who is virtually unknown in the sports world, said he was walking out of a mall with his wife recently when a young girl walked up to him and started screaming.

“I’m serious, she was screaming,” he said. “I was sort of embarrassed. I had to go over and calm her down and give her an autograph . . . and then get the heck out of there.”
