Powell Sets Century Record

Freshman Aprile Powell scored a school-record 31 points as host Century beat Loara, 63-33, in an Empire League girls’ basketball game Thursday.

Century (14-2, 2-0 in league) also tied a school record for victories in a season.

Powell, who also had 14 rebounds, broke the previous record of 28 points, set by Nina Alexander in 1994.

Alli Napier had 18 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots for Century, which led, 31-17, at halftime.

In other Empire League games:

Katella 42, Cypress 34--Lynn Kaneshiro had 14 points and five rebounds for host Katella (8-8, 1-1).

El Dorado 67, Kennedy 44--Stephanie Patten scored 22 points for El Dorado (10-4, 2-0). Sophia Montoya scored 12 points for Kennedy (6-10, 0-2).

In the Academy League:

Liberty Christian 46, Orangewood Academy 27--Lisa Winters had 14 points for host Liberty Christian (10-6, 1-1).

In the Century League:

Santa Ana Valley 46, Orange 33--Vicki Tapia had 14 points and five steals for Santa Ana Valley (5-12, 1-2).

Foothill 43, Villa Park 42--Ashley Massimino took Robyn Templeton’s entry pass from the top of the key, scored, was fouled, and made the free throw to give Foothill a 43-42 lead with 12 seconds remaining.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 41, Buena Park 36--Cara Dykes’ three-point play with 1:30 remaining gave Fullerton (1-12, 1-2) a two-point lead and the Indians held on for their first victory of the season.

Sonora 68, La Habra 46--Aiyana Nash made five three-pointers and scored 38 points for Sonora (13-4, 3-0). Nash made 11 of 14 free throws and had five assists.

Troy 75, Sunny Hills 32--Heidi Hardeman scored 31 points for visiting Troy (11-5, 3-0), which led, 61-23, after three quarters. Sunny Hills is 1-13, 0-3.

In the Golden West League:

Westminster 62, Tustin 27--Kristin Schult had 17 points and Jennifer Gray had 13 points and 19 rebounds for host Westminster (15-3, 3-0).

Rosary 77, Saddleback 40--Sarah Belavic had 10 points, 11 assists and six steals for host Rosary (10-8, 3-0).

Ocean View 83, Santa Ana 18--Anna Lembke scored 19 points and had 11 rebounds to lead Ocean View (11-6, 2-1). Teammate Becky Fraser scored 23 points.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 64, Whittier Christian 28--Liz Pappas scored 14 points and Sheri Harako added 10 for host Orange Lutheran (9-6, 1-2).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 77, Valencia 23--Rochelle Anthony scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Jennifer Saari had 15 points for fourth-ranked Brea Olinda (13-2, 2-0).

Magnolia 37, Savanna 27--Stacy Tewell scored 14 points for host Magnolia (10-6, 2-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 55, University 35--Tamara Inoue had 25 points, seven assists and six steals for fifth-ranked Laguna Hills (14-2, 3-0). Tayyiba Haneef, the Hawks’ 6-foot-6 center, went scoreless, but grabbed nine rebounds and held Monique Mathews to eight points, fewer than half her average.

Estancia 40, Costa Mesa 36--Jessica Waltz made a three-pointer for Estancia during the final minute of the game to give Estancia a 40-36 lead. Waltz finished with nine points. Teammate Amy Deming scored 12 points for the Eagles (15-2, 2-1).

Aliso Niguel 56, Laguna Beach 39--Brooke Hyman had 29 points and 22 rebounds for Aliso Niguel (7-10, 1-2), which broke a six-game losing streak.

In the Sea View League:

Woodbridge 79, Irvine 38--Erin Stovall scored 23 points for second-ranked Woodbridge (14-2, 3-0). Sonja Dahlman had 19 points and 17 rebounds in the loss for Irvine (9-8, 1-2).

Newport Harbor 53, Corona del Mar 47--Michelle Klytta scored 12 points for Newport Harbor (9-6, 2-1) and Lindsay Warmington scored 22 for Corona del Mar.

El Toro 39, Santa Margarita 31--Kristen Kopp scored 17 points as El Toro (5-13, 1-2) upset host Santa Margarita (10-8, 1-2). The Chargers outscored the Eagles, 15-4, in the fourth quarter. Tiara Stone, Santa Margarita’s top scorer averaging 16 points, scored only two.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 58, Mission Viejo 24--Jenny Jennings scored 23 points, including four three-pointers for host Capistrano Valley (10-5, 2-1).
