Kennedy Beats Loara in Three Overtimes

Kennedy made 10 of 12 free throws in the third overtime and outlasted Loara, 80-78, in an Empire League boys’ basketball game Wednesday at Kennedy.

Wade Murakami made five of six free throws in the third overtime and the Fighting Irish made 37 of 47 at the foul line in the game to improve to 6-13, 2-1 in league. David Hinojos scored 22 points for Kennedy, which remained in a four-way tie for first in league.

Neil Thomas had 23 points and six three-pointers for Loara (9-9, 0-3), which sent the game to overtime when Marcus McBride made two free throws with one second remaining in regulation to make the score 58-58.

In other Empire League games:

Cypress 52, Century 42--Wes Bunn scored eight of his 17 points in the fourth quarter when Cypress outscored Century, 17-5. Chad Boberg scored 22 points for Cypress (15-4, 2-1), ranked 10th in the county.

Gabriel Aguirre scored 14 points for Century (12-7, 2-1).

Katella 57, El Dorado 54--Carlos Romero, who scored 21 of his 28 points in the second half, made two free throws with four seconds remaining for Katella (14-3, 2-1). El Dorado’s Kevin Sweet missed a three-pointer at buzzer. Ryan Ayer scored 24 points for the Golden Hawks.

In the Century League:

Canyon 39, Orange 35--Ryan Walker had 13 points for host Canyon (13-7, 1-3). Orange is 8-9, 1-3.

Villa Park 62, El Modena 48--Eric Chenowith had 15 points, 15 rebounds and 14 blocked shots for sixth-ranked Villa Park (17-3, 4-0). George Gorrula scored 16 points for host El Modena (9-10, 1-3).

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park 32, Sunny Hills 28--Buena Park (13-7, 3-1) led, 22-20, at halftime, then held the ball for most of the third quarter and the teams went scoreless in the period. Bryan Kao scored 14 points for Sunny Hills (7-13, 0-4).

Sonora 75, Troy 53--Josh Lien scored 19 points and Jimmy Lien had 15 for seventh-ranked Sonora (15-5, 4-0).

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 54, Rancho Alamitos 45--Eric Kenneth scored 18 points for visiting Garden Grove (8-11, 4-2).

La Quinta 61, Bolsa Grande 45--Fang Li scored 29 points to lead La Quinta (9-8, 4-1), which led, 17-5, after the first quarter.

Los Amigos 51, Santiago 47--Mike Higgins’ four points in the fourth quarter and a last-minute steal by Gary Burns sealed the victory for Los Amigos (9-10, 1-4).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 75, Valencia 64--Matt Bodiford, who made 20 of 22 free throws, scored 24 points for visiting Brea (17-2, 3-0). The Wildcats, ranked eighth in the county, made 18 of 24 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Kevin Jackley scored 18 points for Valencia (10-8, 2-1).

Western 47, Savanna 45--Vince Branstetter, who had 12 points, made a three-pointer in the final minute to provide Western (6-13, 1-2) the margin of victory. Sam Balos scored 13 points for Savanna.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 58, Aliso Niguel 53--Dane Plock had 26 points for Estancia (16-4, 3-1).

Laguna Beach 42, Laguna Hills 38--Chris Sirianni and Ryan Satrappe made three free throws in the final 14 seconds for Laguna Beach (9-9, 3-1).

In the Sea View League:

El Toro 50, Newport Harbor 42--Travis Senik scored 16 points for El Toro (11-9, 2-2), which led by 11 at the half.

Santa Margarita 55, Irvine 30--Allen Krist scored 21 points for visiting Santa Margarita (13-5, 3-1), ranked ninth in the county.

Woodbridge 82, Corona del Mar 49--Chris Burgess had 25 points and 12 rebounds for third-ranked Woodbridge (16-5, 3-1).

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 62, Fountain Valley 51--Josh Greer had 28 points and 14 rebounds and Lohnnie Tape added 22 points for third-ranked Esperanza (17-3, 3-1).

Los Alamitos 60, Huntington Beach 54--A.D. Lamoureux had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Chris Glass had 15 points and seven assists for Los Alamitos (14-5, 3-1), ranked fifth in the county. Matt Jones had 16 points and eight rebounds for the host Oilers (5-13, 2-2).

In Garden Grove League girls’ basketball:

Santiago 49, Los Amigos 30--Angie Ching-Sam scored 22 points to lead visiting Santiago (5-10, 1-3), which led by 15 at the half.

Mater Dei 53, Capistrano Valley 29--Rhonda Gondringer scored 18 points for top-ranked Mater Dei (14-2, 4-0), which outscored Capistrano Valley, 29-9, in the second half.
