An Oxnard firefighter burned his heels while standing atop a burning railway freight car, authorities said Monday.

Veteran firefighter Al Rivera was treated and released from St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard late Sunday night for first- and second-degree burns.

Rivera was attempting to cut a hole in the metal roof of the burning Southern Pacific boxcar when the intense heat burned through his boots, officials said.

The boxcar, filled with paper products, was sitting in a rail yard on East 5th Street when it caught fire at about 9:20 p.m., officials said. The fire was contained in about half an hour. Authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze.
