The Cal State Northridge basketball team has hovered between elation and frustration so many times, Tuesday was nothing new.

The Matadors trailed Cal Poly San Luis Obispo by 25 points in the first half, then pulled to within three in the second. But they couldn’t take the last step and lost, 66-59, in an American West Conference game.

“If we had just gone belly-up and lost by 30 that would bother me a little more,” Coach Pete Cassidy said. “But I have to recognize that our players fought hard to come back.”

The Matadors, 5-16 overall and 1-2 in conference play, rallied from big deficits at Southern Utah and St. Mary’s only to lose.

Cal Poly (11-10, 3-0) dominated for 15 minutes before 3,122, running to a 29-4 lead.

The Matadors rallied to within 53-50 on Eric Gray’s three-point basket with 4:36 to play, but they could get no closer.
