Rubidoux wrestling coach Armando Muniz has been selected to carry the Olympic torch for the Calexico part of its relay-trip to Atlanta this summer. Muniz fought in four welterweight title fights and is in the World Boxing Hall of Fame. He is a former U.S. Olympian, reaching the quarterfinals in 1968. . . . Sean Rockwell had his 12th shutout of the season for Alta Loma’s soccer team last week. . . . In girls’ soccer, Palm Desert stopped Palm Springs’ 18-game winning streak Friday by beating the Indians, 1-0. . . . Maylana Martin and Leaf Newman scored 40 points each for the Perris girls’ basketball team in a 112-45 victory over Rancho Verde. Martin grabbed 19 rebounds and Newman grabbed 13 and had seven steals. . . . In boys’ basketball, Caleb Gervin, whose uncle, George Gervin, was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame on Tuesday, scored 40 points and had 14 rebounds and 10 assists for Cathedral City, which set a team scoring record for points in one game in 117-58 victory over La Quinta. Gervin is averaging 28.8 points. . . . Erron Maxie scored 41 points and grabbed 19 rebounds before fouling out with four minutes to play in Elsinore’s 71-69 victory over Centennial on Friday. . . . Mike Salazar had 38 points, 13 rebounds, 11 assists and 11 steals for Christian Center Academy in a 79-34 victory over Bundy Canyon Christian. . . Steve Lawrence of Ambassador Christian scored 31 points in a 66-61 victory over Baptist Christian.
