Foothill’s Brown to Play Water Polo at UCLA

Foothill’s Brian Brown, the Times Orange County water polo player of the year, signed a letter of intent with UCLA. Brown led the Knights to the Southern Section Division I championship and selected UCLA over California.

Tom Duggan has been hired as the baseball coach at Century High, school officials announced Thursday.

Duggan, 33, played baseball at Edison High and Orange Coast College. He replaces Steve Gomez, who resigned for personal reasons. Duggan, a graduate of Chapman University, also was hired as a teacher at Century.

Allah-mi Basheer, a forward at UC Irvine, is one of 50 semifinalists for the Women’s Basketball Coaches Assn. College All-Star game. The 10-member team will play the U.S. national team April 6 in Atlanta.

Basheer is averaging 17.7 points and 6.7 rebounds this season.

Steve Gonzales, an Orange Coast College linebacker, has signed a letter of intent with the University Hawaii, OCC officials announced.

Gonzales, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound graduate of Newport Harbor, was named first-team All-Mission Conference Central Division last season. He led the team with 103 tackles.

Katella’s Kellie Alva signed a letter of intent with California to play women’s volleyball. Alva, a 6-foot middle blocker, is a two-time all-Southern Section Division III selection.

Mater Dei’s Julie Peck, a midfielder, orally committed to Gonzaga to play soccer and teammate Corrine DiLuigi, a fullback, signed a letter of intent with USC, Monarch girls’ soccer Coach Austin Sharp said.

Ace Riggins, a Rancho Santiago tailback who graduated from Valencia in 1993, signed a letter of intent with Hawaii.
