Propane Tank Rolls Down Hill, Hits House

Share

A propane gas tank outside a home on Upper Lake Road near Lake Sherwood broke free from its foundation Sunday, rolled down a hill and hit a house on Lower Lake Road.

The 250-gallon tank had been resting on a wooden foundation that apparently rotted and gave way about 9:40 a.m., said Ventura County Fire Department officials. The tank rolled about 120 feet downhill before striking the neighboring house.

When fire crews arrived, the tank was leaking gas. The house it struck--370 Lower Lake Road--was evacuated while firefighters and American Gas Co. workers tried to empty the gas into other containers. When about 30 gallons were left inside, workers moved the tank to a nearby field to vent the remaining gas into the air.

The impact caused about $2,000 worth of damage to the house.
