Cal Lutheran Pays Back La Verne

Cal Lutheran defeated defending NCAA Division III champion La Verne, 3-1, in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball opener Friday at Cal Lutheran.

Adam Rauch had a run-scoring single in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie and Sean Smith followed with a sacrifice fly.

Last season, the Leopards (4-2) swept the Kingsmen (4-3-1) in three games in an NCAA regional tournament.

Erik Kiszcak (1-0) pitched four scoreless innings in relief, striking out five.

Rauch and teammate Frank Maldonado each had two hits.

UCLA 9, Pepperdine 4--Jim Parque outdueled Randy Wolf in a nonconference battle of former local pitchers at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Parque (2-0), a Crescenta Valley High graduate, allowed four runs in eight innings for the Bruins (7-4). Wolf (1-1), a former El Camino Real standout, gave up seven runs in 6 2/3 innings for the Waves (4-6).

UCLA broke open a 5-4 game with two runs each in the seventh and eighth innings.

Eric Byrnes was two for four with three runs batted in and Brett Nista had two hits for UCLA. Bruin shortstop Troy Glaus hit his first home run of the season.

Catcher Dennis Twombley had two hits for Pepperdine.

Mt. San Antonio 6, Pierce 2--Jim Landress had two hits, including a two-run home run, but it wasn’t enough for the Brahmas (5-3) in a Mt. San Antonio tournament game.

Pierce 10, San Bernardino 3--Dave Cipolla, Carlos Nunez, Brandon Murphy and Landress each had three hits for the Brahmas in a first-round game of the Mt. San Antonio tournament.

Moorpark 7, Mt. San Antonio 5--Richard Hernandez had a three-run home run for the Raiders (2-6) in the Mt. San Antonio tournament.

Tim Nykoluk had two hits and drove in one run for Moorpark.

Moorpark 4, San Bernardino 3--Eric Soliz and Cory Fish hit doubles and each knocked in a run for the Raiders in a Mt. San Antonio tournament game.

Cerritos 15, Valley 3--Chris Portugal hit a three-run home run in the first inning, but the Monarchs (2-7) could not muster any other offense in a second-round loss at the Stengel tournament.

Starter Clint Marcus gave up seven runs in three innings and struck out six.

Fullerton 6, Valley 4--The Monarchs dropped their first game in the Stengel tournament.

SOFTBALL

Antelope Valley 1, Riverside 0--Cindy Sims singled, stole second base and scored on Monica Dopson’s single in the top of the first inning to give the Marauders the victory in a nonconference game at Riverside.

Dopson made the run stand up, tossing a two-hitter. Sims had two of the Marauders’ six hits.
