Estancia Wins on Plock’s Three-Pointer

Estancia’s Dane Plock made a three-pointer with nine seconds remaining in overtime to clinch a 77-76 victory over West Covina South Hills in the first round of the Southern Section Division III-A boys’ basketball playoffs Friday.

Plock and Chris Candlish each scored 28 points. Candlish also had 14 rebounds.

South Hills (18-6) led, 40-29, at halftime but the Eagles rallied, outscoring the Huskies, 20-8, in the third quarter. Estancia (23-4) took the lead late in the game, but South Hills’ David Chidester hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the score, 67-67, at the end of regulation.

Estancia advances to play Duarte on Tuesday.

In Division II-A:

Lakewood Artesia 59, El Dorado 36--Sophomore James Murdock sparked a 25-0 run in the second half for Artesia. Murdock scored eight during the run and finished with 14 points.

Buena Park 72, Los Amigos 55--Towan Oliver scored 24 points and Courtney Smith added 18 for Buena Park (12-15), which led by 12 at the half. Gary Burns had 14 points to lead Los Amigos (15-12).

Buena Park plays Tustin in the second round Tuesday.

Laguna Hills 55, Bellflower 53--Matt Houser hit an 18-foot jumper with 10 seconds remaining to give Laguna Hills a 54-53 lead. After a missed shot by host Bellflower (21-5), the Hawks added a free throw to seal the victory. Mike Scaglione led Laguna Hills with 18 points and Houser added 16. Rashad Coleman scored 10 points for the Hawks.

Laguna Hills will play Pacific in the second round Tuesday. Pacific defeated Brawley, 78-49.

Los Altos 66, Brea Olinda 59--Brea Olinda lost an 8-7 lead early on and never regained it as the Wildcats (24-3) were upset by visiting Los Altos (19-7). John Heredia had 19 points for Brea Olinda.

Ocean View 59, Monteview 53--The Seahawks (13-15) play top-seeded Compton Dominguez (26-2), a 102-52 winner over South Torrance, in the second round Tuesday.

Troy 75, Mission Hills Alemany 64--Down 37-35, Troy outscored Alemany 18-8 in the third quarter to take the lead for good. John Castillon had 15 points in the first half for Alemany (14-12), but Troy (18-9) switched its defense and held him to only five second-half points.

Jerry Inzunza led Troy with 22 points and David Sun added 16, including four of the team’s nine three-pointers.

Troy will face fourth-seeded Artesia in the second round Tuesday. Artesia defeated El Dorado, 59-36, Friday.

Tustin 56, El Modena 48--David Lalazarian scored 21 points for second-seeded Tustin (24-3). Robert Griffin added 14 points and Ray Hobbs 13.

Tustin will play Buena Park in the second round Tuesday.

Valencia 66, Elsinore 54--Salim Aquil and Robert Smith led a second-half surge that broke a 28-28 halftime tie. Aquil scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half, and Smith scored 19 points, nine in the second half.

The Tigers (17-10) play third-seeded Inglewood in the second round Tuesday. Inglewood defeated Rosemead Bosco Tech, 86-24, Friday.

In Division IV-A:

Calvary Chapel 58, Gardena Serra 57--Kevin Falconer made a free throw with five seconds left to give the host Eagles (22-4) the victory. Calvary Chapel trailed by six entering the fourth quarter, but rallied behind Joe Ortiz (20 points) and Nate Morton (20 points).

The Eagles will play fourth-seeded Los Angeles Baptist in quarterfinals Tuesday. Baptist defeated Mojave, 81-69, Friday.

In Division V-AA:

St. Margaret’s 60, Southern California Christian 39--Rob Miltner scored 20 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, Kris Scubla added 16 points and Todd Shriber had 15 points and 12 rebounds for St. Margaret’s (10-13).

St. Margaret’s will play Riverside Woodcrest Christian in the second round Tuesday. Woodcrest Christian defeated Mammoth, 92-58, Friday.

In Division V-A:

Heritage Christian 85, Long Beach Praise Temple 75--Jared Zielinski had 22 points, Jim Findlater and J.R. Williams each had 18 and Dave Acheson added 17 points for visiting Heritage Christian (17-8). Heritage Christian will play L.A. Shalhevet on Tuesday.
