Orange Coast Wins 10th in Row by Beating Canyons

Orange Coast ran its season-opening winning streak to 10 games by beating Canyons, 4-3, Friday in the Golden Coast Baseball Classic at Orange Coast.

Reliever Ryan Evans pitched out of a ninth-inning jam to preserve the victory for Jamie Surdock (3-0).

The Pirates (10-0) shut out Sequoias earlier Friday, 8-0, behind the five-hit pitching of freshman Eric Turner (2-0).

In other games:

Cypress 5, Southwestern 2--Randy Case went three for four with three runs batted in and Rick Clagett pitched seven innings for Cypress (10-3). The Chargers lost the second game, 9-1, to L.A. Harbor.

Golden West 5, Sequoias 2--Matt Murphy gave up four hits and struck out one in six innings to earn the victory for Golden West (5-3). Joe Zannitto pitched the final three innings for his third save.

The Rustlers lost to Canyons earlier Friday, 14-8, but leadoff hitter Charlie Tuggle reached base in nine of 10 at-bats and scored five runs in the doubleheader.

In the Casey Stengel baseball tournament:

Fullerton 6, L.A. Valley 4--Fullerton rallied from a 4-0 deficit, scoring three runs in the sixth and two in the eighth. Andy Tellez hit a two-run single in the eighth for the victory. Tellez had two hits and three RBIs. Scott Parsonage (2-0) pitched a complete game for Fullerton, retiring 10 of the last 11 batters he faced. In a 15-4 victory over Imperial Valley, Tellez drove in five runs, hitting a three-run home run in the seventh, and Jason Theis had three hits and scored three runs for Fullerton (7-1).

Saddleback 7, Bakersfield 6--Mike Loosbroock hit a two-out, two-run pinch-hit homer in the ninth to give Saddleback a victory in the first game. The homer capped a five-run ninth.

Thys Bakker had eight strikeouts in five innings of two-hit relief and got credit for the victory.

Kevin Brady hit a two-run homer and also had two RBI singles in a 9-5 victory over Cerro Coso.

Ryan McDermott (1-0) had 11 strikeouts in six innings for the victory. Paul Day had a home run, double, single and scored three runs for Saddleback.

In nonconference softball:

Fullerton 7, Southwestern 1--Kristy Osborne pitched five innings, giving up one hit and one run for Fullerton (6-0). At the plate, Osborne had two hits and an RBI. Lynette Velasquez went two for three with three RBIs and Stacey Schaner had two hits and scored two runs for the Hornets.

Golden West 6, Bakersfield 5--Golden West (3-1) scored four runs the fourth inning. Kris Carlson had a triple and three RBIs and Becky Thompson and Staci Byers each had two hits. Jenny Hart (2-0) pitched a complete game, striking out eight, walking four and giving up no earned runs.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, San Diego Mesa 0--Jeff Carlucci had 16 kills and Greg Logan had 41 assists for Golden West (3-0, 2-0), which won, 15-6, 15-6, 15-6.

Orange Coast 3, Grossmont 1--Kevin Reid had 24 kills and Phil Schildts had 19 in the 15-12, 15-10, 17-15 victory for Orange Coast (4-0, 2-0).

In an earlier match, Pasadena defeated Golden West, 3-1.
