Mater Dei, Crenshaw Seeded 1-2

For the fourth consecutive season, Mater Dei and Los Angeles Crenshaw were awarded the top two spots in the CIF Southern Regional boys’ basketball pairings, which were released Sunday.

Mater Dei, top-seeded in the southern region for the fifth consecutive season, won the state Division I title last season.

Crenshaw, which was seeded second after a last-second, 82-81, victory over Los Angeles Fremont in Saturday’s City 4-A final, won state titles in 1993 and 1994.

Mater Dei (32-1), which enters the Southern Regional tournament with a 32-game winning streak, hosts Victor Valley (27-3) in a first-round game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ocean View High.

Crenshaw (25-5) hosts Glendora (25-6) in the first round at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“We’ve been fortunate to reach the regional finals against Crenshaw in recent years,” Mater Dei Coach Gary McKnight said. “Crenshaw is always a tough opponent. But a lot of things can happen to knock out those familiar faces before Saturday’s final.”

Santa Margarita (23-6) was seeded fourth in Division II and hosts San Diego Scripps Ranch at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Woodbridge (28-3) is top-seeded in the Division II girls’ regional pairings. The Warriors host Lemoore (21-7) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

In other Division II games at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday: Brea Olinda (27-3), which was seeded No. 3, hosts Riverside North (23-6) and Ocean View (22-8) is at No. 2 San Diego Scripps Ranch (31-0).

In Division I: Mater Dei (25-3) was seeded third and is at unseeded Clovis West (24-6) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Boys’ and girls’ semifinals in all five divisions will be played Thursday. Saturday’s Southern Regional finals for divisions I, II and III will be at the Pond.

Southern Regional winners will play their Northern Regional counterparts in the state finals March 15-16 at Arco Arena in Sacramento.
