SIX TEAMS TO WATCH : MARINA
Coach: Brian Akian (first year).
1995: 8-2, 4-1 in the Sunset League; finished second to Fountain Valley in league finals.
Key returners: Robin Beauregard, Jr.; Emily Hagen, Sr.; Jenny Lamb, So.; Adrienne Leight, Sr.; Rebecca Miller, So.; Kristi Rietzel, Sr.; Lisa Saenz, Sr.; Donna Sila, Sr.
Key newcomers: Beth Lammers, Fr.; Kala Newquist, Sr.
Outlook: Although Marina will be without distance swimmer and All-American Allison Mijares, now at UCLA, the Vikings will still be a powerhouse in the county and could even challenge Fountain Valley for the league championship. With lots of depth and experience, Marina will be led by Leight, who swims the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke, Beauregard, who swims the 100 back, and Rietzel, who placed seventh in the butterfly at the Southern Section Division I finals last season. Even without Mijares, Akian said the Vikings are stronger and faster than last year’s team. In addition, the first-year coach said he expects some good things from the relay teams.
