Young Gets Mater Dei Past Kennedy

Robin Walker drove in Jodi Schicker with a single in the top of the fifth to lead Mater Dei to a 1-0 victory over Kennedy in a semifinal game of the Cypress softball tournament Friday.

Freshman Marissa Young struck out 15, bringing her total to 34 in 13 innings. Mater Dei (4-0) will play Westminster at Cypress Arnold Park at 7 tonight for the championship.

In the other semifinal game:

Westminster 8, Calvary Chapel 2--Kelly Hauxhurst and Krissy Keene each had two RBIs to lead Westminster. Brenda Quinn pitched a complete game, giving up two unearned runs.

In a consolation game:

Huntington Beach 1, Magnolia 0--Nicole Bertsch drove in Celea Kroeker with a two-out single in the top of the seventh to lead Huntington Beach (2-1). Heather Hibben went the distance, striking out seven and walking none. Huntington Beach plays Ocean View at 1 p.m. today for fifth place.

In the Brea Olinda tournament:

Katella 14, Little Rock 2 (5 innings)--Mandy Vanderberg went three for three with three doubles, three runs scored and three RBIs for Katella (2-1).

In the Costa Mesa tournament:

Corona del Mar 7, Edison 0 (6, time limit)--Jennifer Morgan had three hits and two runs scored for host Corona del Mar (2-2) in a pool-play game.

Costa Mesa 11, Santa Ana 10 (7, tie breaker)--Veronica Quintero scored the game-winning run from third on a passed ball for Costa Mesa (4-0), which won during an international tie-breaker after the teams played to a 6-6 tie through six innings and the time limit.

In the Fullerton softball tournament:

Woodbridge 2, Long Beach Millikan 0--Christy Robitaille pitched a one-hitter, striking out six, as Woodbridge (5-0) won the championship game. Ashley Boone went three for three and Lizzy Lamire had two hits, including an RBI single in the first inning.

Tustin 13, Aliso Niguel 3--Brooke Brown went three for four with three RBIs and Jenny Odum also had three hits for visiting Tustin (2-2). Nicole Stokes stole three bases, giving her 11 in four tournament games.

In nonleague girls’ gymnastics:

Brea Olinda 174, Long Beach Millikan 105--Shaunna DeSimone won the individual all-around with a score of 36.9. DeSimone won on the balance beam (9.7) and the floor exercise (9.4).

In girls’ soccer:

South 4, East 1--Nicole Terry of El Modena was voted the most valuable player with a goal and one assist for Orange County’s South team in the high school senior all-star game. Vanguard teammate Kaylee Whitfield and Annie Luke of Santa Margarita and Jill Nelson of Newport Harbor also scored.

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

Estancia 87, El Modena 79--El Modena’s Toyo Tsujino posted a Southern Section qualifying time the 100 backstroke finishing first in 55:42. The Division II qualifying time is 58.0. Tsujino also won the 500 freestyle (4:55.0) and swam on the winning 200 medley relay (1:49).

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

El Modena 91, Estancia 74--Christina Vasconcellos won the 200 individual medley (2:32.83), the 100 butterfly (1:11.87) and swam legs on the winning 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay for El Modena (2-1).

In nonleague boys’ volleyball:

Los Alamitos 3, Norwalk 0--Chris Komer had 15 kills as Los Alamitos (2-0) won, 15-3, 15-7, 15-7.

Huntington Beach 3, San Clemente 2--Dave McKinzie had 24 kills to help Huntington Beach (2-0) edge San Clemente, 15-8, 8-15, 15-2, 13-15, 16-14.

Whittier Christian 3, Garden Grove 2--Steve Willie had 18 kills for visiting Whittier Christian, which won, 9-15, 8-15, 15-7, 15-8, 15-6.
