Titans Sweep Pacific With 16-4 Rout

Mark Kotsay and Tony Martinez each homered to lead Cal State Fullerton’s 15-hit attack and the Titans completed a three-game series sweep of Pacific, 16-4, Saturday in a Big West Conference game in Stockton.

Kotsay, who finished two for four with three runs batted in and three runs scored, hit his 10th home run of the season in the first inning, driving in Steve Chatham. Martinez, who went three for five with two RBIs, hit his third home run to lead off the second inning.

Titan starter Scott Hild (3-0) went seven innings, giving up seven hits, two runs and striking out five.

Chatham was two for three with three runs scored and Brian Loyd was two for five with four RBIs.

Cal State Fullerton (18-2, 3-0) outscored the Tigers, 38-20, in the series and has won 36 of 40 meetings between the teams.

In Big West Conference softball:

CS Fullerton 3-0, New Mexico State 2-4--Rocky Medina was three for three with an RBI in the second game of a doubleheader for Cal State Fullerton (16-6, 5-1). Brandi Isgar pitched four innings of scoreless relief for the Titans.

Lynn Sheehey pitched a two-hitter for New Mexico State (17-13, 1-3) in the first game.

Long Beach State 1-9, San Jose State 0-4--Tammy Dietrich pitched a two-hit shutout as Long Beach State (9-11, 2-2) swept a Big West Conference doubleheader.

The 49ers scored eight runs in the fifth inning to win the second game.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 4, California 3--UC Irvine (6-4), ranked 44th in the country, upset the 14th-ranked Golden Bears (4-2) in Berkeley. Steve Tallakson won in singles, 7-5, 6-3, then teamed with Cameron Lindee for 9-8 doubles’ victory.

In nonconference track:

USC sweeps--Leslie Coons won three events and Tai-Ne Gibson won two as USC’s women’s team defeated Long Beach State, 99-31, and San Diego State, 102-43. Coons won the hammer throw (186-5), shotput (45-2 1/4) and discus (149-2). Gibson won the 100 and 200 meters, with times of 11.87 and 24.0.

USC also defeated the 49er men, 86-64. Long Beach State’s Jaime Barrigan was a two-event winner for the men, winning the 100 (10.39) and the 200 (21.12).

Blutreich wins discus--Brian Blutreich (Capistrano Valley High, UCLA) of the Bruin Track Club won the discus with a toss of 197 feet 5 inches. Blutreich, who is the coach at UC Santa Barbara, has thrown 202-0 feet this year in preparation for this summer’s Olympic trials, which he has qualified for.

Linetta Wilson of the South Bay Track Club qualified for this summer’s trials by winning the 800 in 2:03.64.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

Hawaii 3, UC Irvine 0--Steven Cavella had 20 kills and Cory Hinkle added 42 assists for UC Irvine (7-11).
