SEASON AT A GLANCE: A swingman who averages nine points for the Mounties (29-3), the 6-foot-1 Benson became a starter this season after being the first player off the bench last season. Montclair Prep defends its State Division V title Saturday in Sacramento against Oakland St. Elizabeth.

WEEK AT A GLANCE: In Southern California Regional play, Benson scored 12 points in a first-round rout of Alpaugh, and had 10 points and 10 rebounds in a semifinal victory over La Jolla Country Day. In the regional final against San Diego Horizon Christian, he scored 14 points, including 10 in a two-minute stretch of the fourth quarter. “He hit the open shots when our other guys were double-teamed,” Montclair Prep co-Coach Howard Abrams said. “It was something special he might never do again.”
