As Expected, Woodbridge Once Again Takes Title

Woodbridge, which won a State Division II girls’ basketball title last year, repeated the feat Friday at Arco Arena, defeating Sacramento El Camino, 51-44.

“There were a lot of expectations,” said Pat Quinn, Woodbridge’s first-year coach. “Everyone’s been living with those expectations for five months, and it’s been tough on everybody.”

El Camino Coach Bill Baxter had to agree.

“Woodbridge played very well--their stars certainly did,” Baxter said. “But at the same time, they knew they were in a tough game.”

Woodbridge junior Erin Stovall scored a game-high 21 points, making eight of 12 free throws in the final 1 minute 47 seconds.

Twelve of her 21 points came in the fourth quarter.

El Camino made only one of its first 17 shots and trailed, 17-8 after one quarter and 26-13 with 3:50 left in the first half. But Woodbridge couldn’t shake the Eagles and held only a 29-22 lead at halftime.

“We felt pretty fortunate,” Baxter said. “If you play that poorly, you should be getting buried.”

But Woodbridge had its own troubles on offense--17 turnovers.
