Calabasas’ Trosper Can’t One-Up Himself

Tanner Trosper threw his second consecutive one-hitter Friday, striking out six and walking two as the Calabasas High baseball team won its Frontier League opener, 5-0, at Santa Clara.

Trosper, who struck out 10 against El Camino Real last week, lost his bid for a no-hitter in the seventh inning when Vince Herrera smacked a two-out triple for the Saints.

Adam Davey had two doubles and two runs batted in for the Coyotes (3-1-1). Teammate Josh Harris had two hits and scored twice.

Santa Paula 12, Moorpark 4--Starter Carlos Torres struck out eight and walked two in 5 2/3 innings as the Cardinals (4-0, 1-0) won a Frontier League opener at Santa Paula.

Willie Zavala had three hits and five RBIs, including a three-run home run. Justin Ames and Erik Franco each had two hits for Moorpark.

Camarillo 5, Thousand Oaks 2--Joe Borchard had a two-run triple in the first inning for the Scorpions (7-1) in a Marmonte League opener at Camarillo.

Mike Corral (2-1) gave up three hits and one walk. He struck out two.

Hoover 4, Muir 2--David Hernandez hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning to give the host Tornadoes (4-2) a victory in their Pacific League opener.

Arcadia 3, Glendale 2--Bryan Chan (0-1) scattered six hits, walked one and struck out five for the Dynamiters (2-1) in their Pacific League opener at Arcadia.

Jason Cly gave up seven hits, walked three and struck out three for the Apaches (3-3, 1-0).

Tony Cisneros drove in Glendale’s two runs with a second-inning double.

Pasadena 6, Crescenta Valley 2--Kevin Enright (0-1) gave up four hits, four walks and struck out three for the Falcons (2-4) in their Pacific League opener at Pasadena.

Gary Godbold had two hits, stole a base and drove in a run for the Falcons.

Montclair Prep 10, Agoura 4--Justin Neishuler had two hits and four RBIs as the visiting Mounties (3-3) beat the Chargers (3-3) in a nonleague game.

Dan Weikel had two hits for Agoura.

Kennedy 12, Chatsworth 4--The Golden Cougars (6-1, 2-0) exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning to pull away from the Chancellors (5-2, 0-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Chatsworth.

John Garland’s bases-clearing triple was the key hit in the inning, making the score 9-2. Teammate Omar Pinto finished with a triple, home run and three RBIs.

Garland (2-1) pitched a complete game with four strikeouts.

Dave Sark had three hits, including a double, and scored twice for Chatsworth.

San Fernando 4, El Camino Real 3--The host Tigers (5-2, 1-1) scored the winning run of the Northwest Valley Conference game on a seventh-inning fielder’s choice with the bases loaded, capping a four-run rally.

Van Nuys 3, Grant 2--Nathan Stein scored the game-winning run on a single by Angel Barajas to complete a three-run seventh inning for the Wolves (1-5) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference opener at Grant (0-6).

SOFTBALL

Moorpark 6, Santa Paula 0--Tracey Milburn had four hits and two stolen bases and scored three runs as the Musketeers (1-3) won a Frontier League opener at Moorpark.

Tina Milburn had two hits, including a two-run home run, and Erin Heinbechner struck out eight with no walks.

Calabasas 2, Santa Clara 1--Junior Kelly Sargent (1-0-1) threw a no-hitter and struck out two for the Coyotes (2-2-1) in a Frontier League opener at Calabasas.

Alemany 2, Harvard-Westlake 0--Regina Yuhasz had two hits and scored once, and Kim Diener pitched a one-hitter for the visiting Indians (5-2, 1-0) in their Mission League opener.

Ventura 4, Oxnard 1--Julie Essary scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Crystal Gravelin in a Channel League opener at Oxnard. Gravelin (1-2) allowed six hits and struck out two for the Cougars (1-4).

Anissa Velasquez (4-2) had five strikeouts and walked none for the Yellowjackets (4-2).

Hoover 5, La Canada 0--Tina Kinney pitched a one-hitter and had 11 strikeouts in a Hoover tournament semifinal at Hoover to hand La Canada (7-1) its first defeat. Kinney also had two hits, two RBIs and scored twice.

Karla Nanne had three hits, including a run-scoring double and a stolen base.

The Tornadoes (3-3) will face Hart in today’s final at Hoover.

Burroughs 1, Glendale 0--Melissa Waters scored on a single by Dani Morris to give the Indians (5-3) a nonleague victory at Glendale. Sophomore Jamie Gibbs (1-1) pitched six innings and allowed three hits to earn her first varsity victory.

Birmingham 15, Canoga Park 1--Yvonne Velazquez had three hits, including a home run and a double, and drove in four runs for the Braves (3-1) in a nonconference game at Canoga Park.

Van Nuys 16, Taft 8--Veronica De La Cueva hit a grand slam, and Regina Perez, Cassie Allison and Melissa Cohen each had three hits for the Wolves (4-2) in a nonconference game at Van Nuys.
