A. Elliott Stoll, a retired dentist who served two terms as mayor of Oxnard, died Saturday. He was 79.

A longtime Oxnard resident, Stoll served as mayor in 1950-51 and again in 1954-56. He also later served on the city’s Planning Commission and Redevelopment Agency.

Stoll was born in Brookings, S.D., on April 25, 1916. He moved to Oxnard with his family in the late 1920s when his father opened a medical practice.

A graduate of Oxnard High School, Stoll attended Stanford University and USC, where he graduated from dental school.

He served as a U.S. Navy dentist during World War II and the Korean War. Between the two wars, Stoll opened a dental practice in Oxnard.

Known by his colleagues in Oxnard politics as simply “Doc” Stoll, he retired from dentistry about 10 years ago.

“Doc had a real dry sense of humor,” said Assemblyman Nao Takasugi (R-Oxnard), who served on the Planning Commission with Stoll in the early 1970s.

Stoll enjoyed duck hunting and almost always had a Labrador retriever at his side. He was a member of the Oxnard Rotary Club and First Presbyterian Church.

“He would have been 80 next month,” longtime friend David Allen said. “His daughter was planning a big birthday party.”
