With the Giants promising to arrange financing and construction of a new stadium, San Francisco voters overwhelmingly approved a measure for a $255-million, 42,000-seat park in the city’s China Basin section.

The victory came in the Giants’ fifth attempt in nine years to win public approval for a replacement for Candlestick Park. The latest proposal, unlike the four previous, called for the stadium to be privately financed.

Infielder Jose Oquendo, who has been in camp with the Philadelphia Phillies as an unsigned free agent since his release by the St. Louis Cardinals, announced his retirement. . . . Former Cy Young award-winner Frank Viola, 35, was assigned to the Toronto Blue Jays’ double-A affiliate in Knoxville. . . . The Montreal Expos assigned pitcher Derek Aucoin and outfielder Cliff Floyd to triple-A Ottawa, and traded catcher Chris Howard to the New York Mets for a player to be named later. . . . Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Esteban Loaiza, who jumped from double-A to tie for the NL lead in starts last season, was sent to the minors. . . . Red second baseman Bret Boone’s throwing elbow will be examined again in Cincinnati after X-rays found a bone chip.
