Brickell’s Home Run Powers Fullerton Past Sonora

Tyler Brickell hit a three-run homer in the top of the sixth and pitcher Michael Garner gave up only four hits as Fullerton defeated Sonora, ranked third in the county, 4-1, in a Freeway League baseball game Friday at Sonora.

Garner struck out 13 and gave up only an unearned run in the fourth for Fullerton (8-3, 5-0 in league).

Sonora (9-1-1, 4-1) scored when Randy Owens tried to steal home and a rare catcher’s balk was called on Fullerton catcher Mario Ramirez, enabling Owens to score.

Fullerton Coach Marty Berson was ejected after disputing the call.

In other Freeway League games:

Sunny Hills 9, La Habra 8--Chris Velotta hit the game-winning single to score Robert Oliver with two out in the bottom of the seventh for Sunny Hills (5-6, 3-2). Velotta also hit his first home run and finished with three hits and three runs batted in.

In the Arrowhead League:

Southern California Christian 5, Anza Hamilton 2--Mark Caballero had a no-hitter broken up by a one-out home run in the seventh. Jeremy Smith struck out the last two batters on six pitches for SCC (7-5, 1-0).

In the Century League:

Orange 7, El Modena 3--Brett Sewell went the distance for Orange (5-5, 2-3), striking out six and giving up four hits. Tony Damiano had three hits, a double and two RBIs for Orange.

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 15, Garden Grove 0--Gerald Laird was three for three with five runs scored, Jhamal Dawkins had three hits, including his third home run of the season, and four RBIs and Tom Clark had three hits and three RBIs for La Quinta (11-3, 3-0).

Pacifica 2, Santiago 0--John Ames and Chris Reidel combined on a six-hit shutout for Pacifica (7-4-1, 4-0).

In the Golden West League:

Santa Ana 1, Westminster 0--Carlos Esparza pitched a five-hitter. With two outs in the third, he scored from second on a error for Santa Ana (4-7, 2-3). Westminster is 9-3, 3-2.

Servite 5, Ocean View 2--Ryan Garko doubled and homered and Jim Munroe (2-1) struck out eight for eighth-ranked Servite (8-4, 3-2).

Tustin 8, Saddleback 1--Pepe Vazquez was three for three, with three doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored for Tustin (6-5, 3-2). Teammate Chad Chop had two hits and two RBIs.

Heath Bell pitched six innings, striking out seven, giving up two hits and walking none.

In the Olympic League:

Brethren Christian 5, Whittier Christian 2 (11)--Edgar Fermin hit a three-run double in the top of the 11th for Brethren Christian (8-2, 4-1).

Orange Lutheran 17, Ontario Christian 5--Tim Smith had three hits and an RBI and Che Holloway had one hit and three RBIs for Orange Lutheran (4-5, 2-3).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 6, Aliso Niguel 1--Matt Broesamle (3-1) gave up five hits and struck out five for Costa Mesa (6-4, 3-2).

Laguna Hills 4, University 2--Tony Milo pitched a complete game, giving up three hits and striking out nine, for visiting Laguna Hills (9-3, 5-0).

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 11, Irvine 7--Chad Johnson and Ryan Achterberg hit two-run homers and Royal McMackin hit a home run for Corona del Mar (6-4, 3-2).

Santa Margarita 6, Newport Harbor 0--Chad Selani had two hits and two RBIs for Santa Margarita (4-6, 1-4).

Woodbridge 5, El Toro 2--Woodbridge scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to upset eighth-ranked El Toro. El Toro (7-3-1, 3-1-1) scored twice in the top of the sixth to tie the score, 2-2. After Woodbridge took the lead again, Kevin Beavers came on in relief to earn his first save.

Chad Harris had two doubles and two RBIs for the Warriors (5-4, 3-2).

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 10, Dana Hills 5--The second-ranked Cougars scored five runs in the top of the ninth. Bryan Canfield had two hits and two RBIs and Rik Currier had two hits and an RBI for Capistrano Valley (7-2, 3-2).

Mater Dei 14, Mission Viejo 0--Mike Kolbach had two hits and three RBIs and pitched four innings to earn his third victory without a loss for Mater Dei (9-1, 5-0), ranked No. 1 in the county. Mike Hessman hit his third home run for the Monarchs.

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 8, Edison 2--Tommy Nicholson had three hits and three RBIs for host Esperanza (5-6, 3-2).

Los Alamitos 5, Marina 1--Jason Ball pitched a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts for Los Alamitos (8-3, 2-3). Josh Roberts had the only hit for Marina, a leadoff single in the second. Kevin Feterik had a two-run single in a five-run fifth.
