Section Honors Vasiljevic, Burrell

Pero Vasiljevic of Simi Valley High and John Burrell of Highland have been selected to the Southern Section Division I first team in basketball.

Vasiljevic, a 6-foot-9 senior center who was The Times’ Ventura County Player of the Year, averaged 24.6 points, 11.6 rebounds and 3.1 blocked shots for the Pioneers.

Burrell, a 6-2 senior forward, led the region’s large schools in scoring with an average of 29.9.

Players from the region receiving second-team honors are Ryan Nielsen of Royal, Ceneka Shaw of Buena, Nathan Sinning of Crescenta Valley and Brian Laibow of Agoura.

Football

Lon E. Boyett, a former tight end with four NFL teams, has been hired as wide receivers and tight ends coach at Antelope Valley College.

Boyett was head coach at Rosamond High the past five seasons. He played football and basketball at Cal State Northridge in 1975-77 and at Antelope Valley High.

Gabe Crecion of Chaminade High, an all-state tight end, has been selected to play in the Shrine California-Texas all-star football game at Cal State Fullerton July 20 at 7 p.m. Ted Iacenda of Hart and Ennis Davis of Reseda are also on the team.

Baseball

A rooter bus will take fans from Lancaster to Bakersfield for the JetHawks’ California League opener April 4. Cost is $15, which includes the bus ride and a ticket for the game. Seating is limited.
