Long Beach Misses Chance to Move Alone Into First

Long Beach State dropped into second place in Big West Conference baseball, losing to Nevada Las Vegas, 5-4, Friday in Las Vegas.

The 49ers are 22-15, 6-2 in conference, a half game behind Cal State Fullerton. Fullerton’s game with New Mexico State was rained out Friday. The Titans and Aggies will play a doubleheader today in Las Cruces, N.M.

Long Beach had a 2-0 lead going into the sixth inning, but Las Vegas tied the score in the bottom of the sixth and eventually took the lead for good in seventh.

Marcus Jones went six innings for the 49ers, striking out 10.

In Big West Conference softball:

Long Beach State 1-5, New Mexico State 0-0--Amy Miner and Tammy Dietrich pitched shutouts for the 49ers (22-15, 10-4), who moved into second place in conference.

In the first game, Long Beach scored an unearned run in the first and Miner pitched a six-hitter to post her third consecutive shutout and extend her scoreless-inning streak to 22. In the second game, Dietrich gave up only three hits and Amanda Favorite had two runs batted in for Long Beach.

In late Thursday Big West Conference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 4-6, Hawaii 3-3--The Titans (31-4, 11-5) swept a doubleheader from Hawaii in Honolulu. Beth Queypo hit a game-winning single to score Julie Williams in the top of the seventh for Fullerton in the first game.

In the second game, Brandi Isgar hit a two-run home run to highlight a six-run sixth inning. Isgar (15-8) was also the winning pitcher in the first game.
