Woodbridge Beats Sailors for 1st Place

Jackie Dix and Heaven Yoshino each won two events to help Woodbridge take sole possession of first place with an 85-51 victory over Newport Harbor in a Sea View League girls’ track and field meet.

Dix won the 100 (12.3 seconds) and 200 meters (26.0) and Yoshino won the 400 (1:00.7) and 300 hurdles (46.6) for the Warriors (4-0 in league).

Newport Harbor’s Mindy Clayton won three events, the 100 hurdles (16.9), long jump (16 feet 4 inches) and triple jump (35-10). The Sailors fell to 3-1.

In other Sea View League meets:

Santa Margarita 76, Corona del Mar 49--Amanda Shanklin won the 100 hurdles (16.8), 300 hurdles (49.7) and triple jump (34-0) and Katie Nuanes won the 800 (2:23.9) and 1,600 (5:16.2) for host Santa Margarita (3-1).

El Toro 86, Irvine 60--Mila Schulenberg won the 100 (13.5), 100 hurdles (16.8) and 300 hurdles (50.3) for Irvine.

In the Century League:

Santa Ana Valley 71, Foothill 65--Maribel Delgado swept the distances races (800, 1,600, 3,200) and ran a leg on the deciding 1,600 relay for Santa Ana Valley (3-1 in league).

In the Freeway League:

Troy 85, Sonora 42--Brandi Marie Sorsby won the 100 (12.6) and 200 (26.9) and Stacy Keen won the long jump (14-6) for Sonora.

In the Golden West League:

Tustin 67, Santa Ana 64--Shemikia Perkins helped the Tillers (4-1, 4-0) edge the Saints by winning the 100 hurdles (17.1), long jump (15-10) and triple jump (34-2 1/2).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 115, Savanna 17--Sarah Bonilla won both hurdle events to lead host Brea Olinda.

In the Sunset League:

Fountain Valley 74, Esperanza 62--Kristin Deatherage won both hurdle races and the high jump for host Fountain Valley as the Barons handed the Aztecs only their third league loss in the past 16 years. The Aztecs also lost this season to league leader Edison.

In Empire League boys’ track and field:

El Dorado 86, Kennedy 36--Ryan Tenpas won the high jump (6-4) and Chris Fox won the discus (144-4 1/2) for host El Dorado (3-1).

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 70, La Habra 56--Fullerton’s Alejandro Sanchez won the 200 (23.9), 400 (53.4) and participated on the Indians’ winning 400-relay team.

Troy 59, Sonora 59--Remigio Garcia won the 1,600 and 3,200, with times of 4:53.8 and 10:48.0, for Sonora. Teammate David Cuevas won the 300 hurdles (42.9) and the long jump (19-7 3/4).

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 105, Rancho Alamitos 21--Jason Bruce won the high jump, long jump, and the triple jump to help the Argonauts clinch their fifth consecutive league title. Brian Jones won the 200, 400 and ran on the winning 400 relay team for Garden Grove.

In the Golden West League:

Saddleback 83, Ocean View 48--Saddleback’s Juan Lomeli won the 110 (17.4) and 300 hurdles (43.9) and tied for first in the high jump at 6-0.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Aliso Niguel 86, Estancia 39--Josiah Jones won the 110 hurdles (16.2), 300 hurdles (44.3) and triple jump (41-2) for visiting Aliso Niguel (5-1, 3-1).

In the Sea View League:

Santa Margarita 86, Corona del Mar 49--Matt Nickels (high jump, triple jump, 200) and Matt Blasdel (400, 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles) each won three events for host Santa Margarita (3-1).

El Toro 86, Irvine 59--Elliott Parks won the high jump (6-4), the long jump (22-2) and the triple jump (42-8 3/4) for El Toro (4-0).

Kojo Arhin won the 100 (11.1) and 200 (23.2) for Irvine.

Woodbridge 92, Newport Harbor 42--William Stoval won the 100 (11.1) and 200 (23.4) for Woodbridge (2-2 in league). Newport Harbor sophomore Chuck Loo won four events, the 110 hurdles (16.2), 300 hurdles (42.7), high jump (6-2) and triple jump (41-2).

In the Sunset League:

Edison 100, Marina 31--Edison senior Nate Fox won the pole vault (15-0) and the Chargers remained undefeated in league.

Esperanza 74, Fountain Valley 62--Sean Jarne won the discus with a county-leading mark of 176-2 for visiting Esperanza. Travis Vandrovec set a school record in the pole vault (14-3) for Fountain Valley.

Huntington Beach 82, Los Alamitos 51--Jess Strutzel won three events (200, 400, 800) for the Oilers.
