Two Slaying Suspects Arrested in Oregon

Two Sylmar men were arrested in Oregon in connection with the stabbing death of a 27-year-old Pacoima man last month, police said.

Robert Charles Scherrer, 26, and Jesse Ira Martin, 32, are awaiting extradition to California after their arrests Sunday in Grant’s Pass, Ore., on suspicion of murder, said Det. Frank Bishop of the LAPD’s Foothill Division.

The two men were riding in a Jeep Sunday with a friend when the driver, who police said was under the influence of alcohol, lost control of the vehicle and crashed, Bishop said. The suspects were taken to a local hospital, he said.

The men gave false names to police officers, but when Scherrer’s mother, who lives in Oregon, came to see him at the hospital, she gave the officers the names of the suspects, Bishop said.

When police officers ran a check on the two men, they realized the men were wanted in California on suspicion of murder, Bishop said.

Los Angeles detectives were notified Monday of the arrests, and flew to Oregon Tuesday to start extradition proceedings, police said.

The suspects were sought in the death of Alfredo Gamez, police said, who was stabbed to death March 9 during a dispute at a house in the 13100 block of Bryson Street.

The men knew each other, but witnesses said they did not know why the three men were arguing, police said.
