Ramirez Pitches In, 1-0

Marcella Ramirez pitched a three-hitter to lift Rio Mesa High to a 1-0 victory over Ventura in a Channel League softball game Friday at Rio Mesa.

The Spartans (16-4, 10-2 in league play) struck early and held on, scoring in the first inning when Jade Sawyer singled home Carol Saldana. The victory keeps Rio Mesa in second place in the league, a game behind San Marcos.

Ramirez (13-4) struck out seven and walked three.

Crystal Gravelin (5-17) took the loss for the Cougars (5-19, 3-9).

San Marcos 10, Hueneme 0--Jenny Hehnke (18-3) pitched a no-hitter for the Channel League-leading Royals (18-4, 11-1) at Hueneme (5-15, 4-8).

Buena 12, Santa Barbara 0--Robyn Reida had three hits and two runs batted in, and Robyn Peet had two hits as the Bulldogs (15-8, 8-4) routed the Dons (8-13, 3-9) in a Channel League game at Buena.

Alemany 3, Chaminade 2--Regina Yuhasz’s two-run single highlighted a three-run fourth inning for the Indians (15-4, 6-1) in a Mission League game at Alemany. Alemany’s Annette Ramirez had two hits, including a triple.

Louisville 3, Harvard-Westlake 0--Becky Witt tripled for Louisville (11-7, 7-0) in a Mission League game at Harvard-Westlake (9-7-2, 1-7). Jenny Bruno had two hits for the Wolverines.

Santa Clara 6, Malibu 2--Six consecutive batters bunted in a six-run fourth inning for the Saints (11-8, 6-7) in a Frontier League game at Santa Clara.

Santa Clara’s Darlene Duarte (8-5) took a no-hitter into the seventh before finishing with a three-hitter. She struck out four and walked one. Both runs were unearned.

Moorpark 12, Nordhoff 7--Jennifer Jaegge (1-4) pitched a six-hitter with four strikeouts and five walks as the Musketeers (13-8, 12-1) clinched their third consecutive Frontier League title with a victory at Nordhoff.

Tina Milburn had a two-run home run and Meaghan Finnerty had a two-run double for Moorpark.

TENNIS

Van Nuys 19 1/2, Marshall 10--John Florez and Archie Santos swept their three doubles matches for the Wolves (14-1) in a City Section 3-A quarterfinal playoff match at Van Nuys.

Noah Newman swept four singles matches for the Barristers (12-3).

Cleveland 17, Carson 12 1/2--Steve Jung swept all four matches for the Cavaliers (10-6) in a City 3-A quarterfinal playoff match.

Royal 17, Channel Islands 1--Oscar Garcia and Donald Oh (24-9) swept their No. 1 doubles matches, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, and Mark Perillo swept his No. 1 singles matches, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0, to help the Highlanders (16-4, 12-2) clinch the top spot in the Marmonte League.

Bryan Lopez of Channel Islands (2-15, 0-14) defeated Frankie Marquez, 6-2.

Westlake 11, Agoura 7--Darren Joe swept all three matches for the Warriors (11-6, 9-5), who tied for third place in the Marmonte League at Westlake.

Brad Wong and Kenny Simpson won two in doubles for Westlake.

BOYS’ TRACK

Channel League finals--Hueneme’s Ronney Jenkins set two meet records with a time of 10.66 seconds in the 100-meter dash and a 23-5 1/2 effort in the long jump at Santa Barbara City College.

In the 200, Jenkins ran 21.96 and finished second to Santa Barbara’s Phil Pipersburg, who set a meet record in 21.61.

Foothill League finals--Jalal Milby of Hart was a double winner at College of the Canyons, clocking 50.0 seconds for the 400 meters and 22.8 in the 200.

Xavier Peters of Burbank was second in the 400 at 50.3, while Santi Gingrasso of Burbank clocked 23.0 for second in the 200.

Gingrasso also ran the third leg and Peters anchored Burbank’s victorious 400 relay team, which clocked 43.9.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Channel League finals--Ventura’s Nicole Campbell won the 800 with a time of 2:20.39 at Santa Barbara City College.

Buena’s Stacey Hebert won the 110 high hurdles in 16.14 and the 300 low hurdles in 46.05. Hebert also ran a leg in the 1,600 relay for Buena, which won in a time of 4:08.79.

Foothill League finals--Sophomore Julie Harris was a double winner for Canyons, clocking 5:04.9 in the 1,600 and 11:22.3 in the 3,200 at College of the Canyons.

Harris was followed in the 1,600 by her freshman teammate, Lauren Fleshman, in 5:08.1. Junior Breanne Schweitzer of Saugus was third in 5:23.7.

Schweitzer clocked 11:23.4 for second in the 3,200, with Fleshman third in 11:40.4.

Melody Sherman of Burroughs was also a double winner, running 25.2 in the 200 and 59.1 in the 400.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Cal Lutheran 5-1, Azusa Pacific 4-9--Heidi Stevens singled home Bekkah Snider with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Regals (31-4) in the first game of a nonconference doubleheader at Cal Lutheran.

Aimee Snider and Xochitl Castillo each had three hits for the Regals.

In the second game, the Cougars (42-10) handed Cal Lutheran its biggest loss since April 29, 1994, when Redlands won a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game, 11-1.
