Malibu is starting a football program in the fall. Lawson will coach the freshman-sophomore team until it begins competition at the varsity level in 1998.

“I’ve built the first story at Chaminade,” Lawson said. “Now it’s somebody’s turn to come and add on.”

Defensive coordinator Ed Croson, also the school’s athletic director, will coach Chaminade on an interim basis.

“Our program has been pretty solid for a while,” Croson said. “Bringing someone in from the outside isn’t something we wanted to do.”

Chaminade was 11-2 last season and lost to Diamond Bar, 14-10, in the Southern Section Division III semifinals.
