Softball Coach Parts Ways With Hueneme

Hueneme High softball Coach Patty Frash said she will not return next season, ending her three-year tenure with the Vikings.

“[The Hueneme administration] said they wanted an on-campus person to coach the team,” Frash said. “I’m disappointed. I took over a mess when I got there; now the kids are learning to play and I won’t be there for them.”

Frash, 38, had a record of 17-45 at Hueneme. The Vikings were 5-17 overall, 4-10 in Channel League play this season. Frash guided Hueneme to the Southern Section Division I playoffs in 1995.

The Southern California Stealth, a club team based in Van Nuys, won the State championship in the under-12 division last weekend in Palm Springs and qualified for the Amateur Softball Assn. national championships in Orlando, Fla., on Aug. 6-11.

Elena Ferrero pitched a perfect game in a 3-0 victory over Infinity of Orange County in the title game.

Track and Field

Beth Burton of Cal State Northridge will attempt to become a two-time All-American when she competes in the shotput in the NCAA championships at the University of Oregon on Thursday.

Burton, the school record-holder in the shotput at 52 feet 3 1/4 inches, earned All-American recognition in the 20-pound weight throw in March when she placed eighth in the NCAA indoor championships.

The top finishers with U.S. citizenship in each event are awarded All-American certificates.

The meet runs from today through Saturday.

Christina Magana of Fallbrook High, San Diego Section champion in the discus, has signed with Cal State Northridge.

Magana, who won the San Diego Section title Saturday on her last throw, has bests of 142 feet 4 inches in the discus and 38 feet in the shotput.

Sharika Higgins of Channel Islands High, the Ventura County champion in the 100, 200 and 400 meters the past two years, has signed with Washington State.

Higgins has bests of 12.16 seconds in the 100, 24.60 in the 200 and 56.98 in the 400. She placed fifth in the 200 and sixth in the 400 in the Division I races of Southern Section championships May 18.

Golf

Pepperdine begins play today in the 30-team NCAA Championships, a four-day, 72-hole tournament held at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Jason Gore, formerly of Hart High and College of the Canyons, and Kevin Marsh led the Waves to fourth place at the NCAA West Regional, helping the team secure a berth in the NCAA Championships for the second time.

Field Hockey

Millionaires, a team composed of Canadian national team members, successfully defended its super men’s Division title Monday in the 25th annual California Cup at the Field Hockey Sports Center at Moorpark College.

Millionaires defeated Breakfast Club in the final for the second consecutive year, besting the American team, 3-2. Breakfast Club included several members of the U.S. national team.

Other division champions were the University of British Columbia (super women), Zehlendorf of Berlin, Germany (competitive men and women), Taiwan (social), Short Corner of San Diego (under-19 women), Roadrunners of Ventura (under-16), Taiwan (under-15 boys and under-12 mixed) and Bulldogs of Thousand Oaks (under-9 mixed).

Tennis

Freshman Angela Lawrence and junior Isabela Petrov of Pepperdine advanced to the quarterfinal round of doubles play to earn All-American honors at the NCAA Championships last week in Tallahassee, Fla.

Basketball

The Vaquero Camps, headed by Glendale College Coach Brian Beauchemin, will be held June 24-28, July 10-14 and July 29-Aug. 2.

Softball

Scia Maumausolo was chosen most valuable player of Cal State Northridge’s softball team at the team banquet. Maumausolo, a senior catcher, hit .449 with 17 home runs and and 44 runs batted in.

Other awards went to Jill Stribling (most improved player), Chelo Lopez (Golden Glove), Julie Sessler and Kelly Toovey (outstanding defense), Shelby Wilcox, (scholar athlete) and Tara Glaister (rookie of the year).
