Servite’s McGraw Commits to Play for Nevada Las Vegas

Jeff McGraw, a first-team Times All-Orange County selection in golf last season, will attend Nevada Las Vegas, Servite Coach Jamie McCance said.

McGraw, the Golden West League individual champion in 1995 and the Sunset League champion in ‘94, finished second in the Golden West League this season.

Mike Lauder, like McGraw a four-year member of the Servite golf team, has accepted an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy and will play golf, McCance said.

Chapman baseball players Cale Shepherd and Matt McCready were named to the NCAA Division III All-West Region team. Shepherd was a first-team pick and McCready made the second team.

Two Chapman track and field athletes were named to the regional academic All-American team: seniors Mary Folino (3.35 grade-point average, political science) and Christy Carvin (3.36, sociology/education).

Brian Norris, a sophomore outfielder at Cypress College, has signed a letter of intent with Cal Poly Pomona, Cypress officials said. Norris 5-10, 180, a reserve outfielder, played in 27 of 55 games. batted .325 (13/40) with 1 homer and 8 RBI, 10 runs scored. He graduated from Western High in 1993.

Long Beach State right-hander Ryan Brannan was one of seven walk-ons to survive the U.S. Olympic baseball tryouts in Millington, Tenn., Olympic coaches said. Brannan and the others will join 41 players who already have been invited to camp.

Brennan, a graduate of Huntington Beach High who was used as a reliever by Long Beach, was 4-1 with a 1.88 ERA and 14 saves.

The 51 players will practice at the USA Baseball Stadium, with the roster being reduced to 25 players by June 16. That team will tour the United States and play international teams as a warmup for the Olympics. The final cut will be to a 20-man Olympic roster.
