The Santa Margarita golf team will attempt to become the first Southern Section champion since 1987 to win the CIF-Southern California Golf Assn. team championship today at The SCGA Members’ Club at Rancho California in Murrieta.

Santa Margarita, which won the Southern Section title last month, won the CIF-SCGA title in 1992. The Eagles are led by senior Steve Wagner and Greg Pittenger and junior Kelly Craig.

Sunny Hills, the section runner-up, also could challenge in the event that matches the top teams and individuals from the Southern, Los Angeles City, San Diego and Central sections.

A Southern Section team has won the title in five of the last six years, but in each case the winner hadn’t won the section title. Westlake Village Westlake in 1987 was the last team to win both titles.

Orange County will have 10 golfers competing for the boys’ individual title--Craig, Wagner, Sunny Hills’ Jin Park and Philip Lee, Los Alamitos’ Jason Beach, Foothill’s Nick Seymour, Huntington Beach’s Chris Wilson, Brea Olinda’s Anthony Eliason, University’s Bill Bodensteiner and Servite’s Adam Ainbinder.

Woodbridge’s Yon Yin, winner of the first Southern Section girls’ individual championship, is among those competing in the girls’ individual championship this afternoon.
