Why Pick on Schott, Compared to These Guys?

Readers of maturity will remember the song “Harper Valley PTA” and appreciate that ladies of ability, candor and the courage to express their thoughts often suffer unpleasantness from co-holders of power or critics in the media.

Marge Schott is a “character,” so (like Hillary Rodham Clinton) she must take some heat. “Best interest of sports,” my foot! Al Davis runs his team up and down the West Coast, sues his league and wins. The Cowboy owner defies the league and signs his own marketing contracts. A 20th-Century carpetbagger stole Cleveland’s team (after profiting $150 million or so) and moves it to Baltimore to start the same con game.

None of these worthies were fined or suspended, despite the comment this week by an owner that “when you buy a sports team you buy into social responsibility.” Just not true, unless it involves George Steinbrenner or Marge Schott.
