Rockies Pound Maddux for Seven Runs and Rout Braves, 19-8

The Colorado Rockies set a team record for runs, roughing up Greg Maddux and five relievers for 21 hits Friday night in a 19-8 romp over the Atlanta Braves at Denver.

Dante Bichette, who had a two-run homer, and Ellis Burks, who drove in four runs, each had three hits. Colorado tied a club mark for hits, breaking loose after the Braves took a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

The Rockies scored twice in the second, twice in the third and three times in the fourth, tying the game, 7-7. They took a 12-8 lead with five runs in the fifth, and added seven runs in the seventh.

Maddux gave up seven runs and 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings, his shortest outing since July 7, 1991 at San Francisco. He didn’t take the loss, but his earned-run average climbed to 3.41.

Pittsburgh 10, San Diego 0--Zane Smith pitched a six-hit shutout for his 100th career victory as the Pirates won at San Diego.

Smith (4-3) also recorded his 1,000th strikeout in his first complete game since 1994. Smith, 35, is 100-112 in his 11-year career.

Jeff King went four for five with his 14th homer and a double. He drove in two runs and scored three as Pittsburgh won for the seventh time in 10 games.

Houston 11, Philadelphia 5--Jeff Bagwell and Derek Bell homered, and the Astros spoiled Carlos Crawford’s major league debut at Houston.

Bagwell hit a two-run homer in the third inning, and Bell’s two-run single during a six-run fourth finished Crawford (0-1).

Montreal 9, Chicago 3--Jeff Fassero gave up five hits in 8 2/3 innings, and F.P. Santangelo drove in three runs to lead the Expos over the Cubs at Chicago.

The game was scoreless entering the sixth, but Montreal sent 10 men to the plate against Frank Castillo (1-8) and Mike Perez.

The Expos got a run-scoring single by Henry Rodriguez and a bases-loaded single by Santangelo.

Florida 12, New York 2--Devon White hit his fourth career grand slam during a seven-run seventh inning and Terry Pendleton had four hits, leading the Marlins at New York.

The Marlins led, 5-2, before sending 12 batters to the plate in the seventh. Jeff Conine led off with a single, Gary Sheffield walked and Colbrunn hit an run-scoring single. After a double by Pendleton and three consecutive walks, White homered off Bob MacDonald.

St. Louis 9, San Francisco 4--Brian Jordan homered during a six-run eighth inning as the Cardinals defeated the Giants at San Francisco.

With the score tied, 3-3, Mark Sweeney drew a leadoff walk and Gary Gaetti singled. John Mabry followed with an RBI single, and a second run scored when catcher Kirt Manwaring threw wildly trying to get Mabry at second.

Luis Alicea hit a run-scoring single and Benes doubled. After Alicea scored on a wild pitch, Jordan homered, his fifth of the year.
