* When: Today through Sunday. In the event of a tie, there will be an 18-hole playoff Monday.

* TV: Today and Friday: 8 a.m.-11 a.m. and 2 p.m.-4:30 p.m. ESPN, and noon-2 p.m. NBC. Saturday and Sunday: 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. NBC.

* Key players: Masters champion Nick Faldo goes after the second major title of the year and is rated one of the favorites by many, including Tom Watson, who said Faldo’s steady game and putting are a cut above. Greg Norman, who finished second in the 1995 U.S. Open is back, as well as defending champion Corey Pavin, who won his first major last year at Shinnecock Hills. Other likely contenders include Colin Montgomerie, Phil Mickelson, Mark O’Meara, Steve Elkington, Ernie Els, Tom Lehman, Davis Love III, Loren Roberts, Bernhard Langer and Costantino Rocca.

* What to watch: Four-time champion Jack Nicklaus, 56, is playing in his 40th consecutive U.S. Open and maybe his last. The USGA gave him a special exemption to play. Two-time U.S. Amateur champion Tiger Woods, 20, is playing in his second U.S. Open. He withdrew because of a wrist injury in the second round last year.
