City Committee to Rule on Charges That Engilman Recruited at Sylmar

The City Section rules committee is expected to hand down a decision today regarding allegations that Sylmar High football Coach Jeff Engilman recruited San Fernando linebacker Derrell Daniels and Taft running back Donald Carpenter to play for the Spartans next season.

Daniels and Carpenter have worked out in Sylmar’s weight room during the off-season and have filed for transfers through the open-enrollment policy, which allows students one transfer to any school within their district.

Golf

Ross Fulgentis of Westlake High has been chosen most valuable player in the Marmonte League. Fulgentis broke the league tournament record by firing a one-under-par 283 over four rounds.

Joining Fulgentis on the all-league team are J.T. Kohut, Alex Kuyumjian, Linda Ishii and Matt McCrite of Westlake and Dustin Luckett of Newbury Park.

Baseball

Infielders Ryan Kritscher of UC Santa Barbara and Dennis Konrady of Pepperdine have signed and will begin their professional careers in the Appalachian League after being drafted last week.

Kritscher, a Thousand Oaks High graduate who batted .397 for Santa Barbara, will report to the St. Louis Cardinals’ affiliate in Johnson City, Tenn. Konrady, who batted .303, will play at Burlington, N.C., a Cleveland Indians’ affiliate.

Former Taft High and Nevada Las Vegas second baseman Stacy Kleiner, a 16th-round pick, signed with the St. Louis Cardinals. Kleiner will leave Sunday for Augusta, N.J., to play for the New Jersey Cardinals of the New York-Penn League.

Basketball

St. Genevieve High has named coaches for its boys’ and girls’ teams. John Van Grinsven, an assistant the past five seasons, is the boys’ coach. He replaces Darrius Floyd, who resigned after one season to take an assistant coaching position at Scottsdale Community College in Arizona.

Ben Ramos, junior varsity girls’ coach for two years, has been promoted to coach the varsity.

Sylmar High will host the “War on the Floor” boys’ tournament June 26-July 1.

The 24-team tournament includes 16 teams from the region, including Canoga Park, the City Section 3-A Division runner-up.

Water Polo

The Buena High booster club is hosting a summer program for boys and girls Monday-Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the school pool.

Students entering grades 9-12 are invited.

Cross-Country

The men’s and women’s teams at Moorpark College were recipients of the fall 1995 Scholar Award. The women’s team had a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 and the men’s a 3.09.
