Writers Deserve Spotlight

Share

Re “Screenwriters Want to Tell Own Stories” (June 12): I must say that I have always been amazed that films are promoted these days as “A Film By (naming the film’s director).” The director certainly offers his or her vision but, in the least, the script provides the catalyst for the vision. Why does the story now suddenly belong to the person who puts it on screen?

As an actor I am constantly surprised to watch the written word take a back seat once the production is underway and with it, the writer. Mr. Pogue has the right idea in stepping into the publicity spotlight. It will be to his professional advantage and help us all to remember that, truly, the story is still the thing.
