Hiegert Is a Finalist at Sacramento

Bob Hiegert, former athletic director at Cal State Northridge, is one of five finalists for the job of athletic director at Cal State Sacramento.

Hiegert, who served as Northridge athletic director from 1965 to 1994, applied for the Sacramento job in April and was interviewed last week.

Awards

Anwawn Jones of Montclair Prep, Jenn Detmer of Thousand Oaks, Jon Garland of Kennedy, and Harvard-Westlake High were recognized among the best in the state by Cal-Hi Sports magazine.

Jones, a blue-chip athlete in football and basketball, was selected the boys’ athlete of the year among small schools. Detmer, a three-sport standout, was named the girls’ junior athlete of the year.

Garland, who helped lead Kennedy to its second consecutive City Section 4-A Division baseball title, was named the state junior player of the year.

Harvard-Westlake, which won state titles in girls’ volleyball and boys’ basketball in the past school year, was named the state school of the year among medium schools.

Golf

Jason Gore of Valencia lost to Brian Crocker of Rancho Mirage, 4 and 2, in the second round of match play of the California State Amateur championships Thursday at Pebble Beach.

Gore, a former Hart High standout and Pepperdine senior-to-be, defeated Kevin Marsh of Goleta, 4 and 2, in Wednesday’s first round.

Cal State Northridge has hired Carrie Leary to coach its women’s team, which begins its inaugural season this fall.

Leary, a member of UCLA’s 1991 NCAA championship team, was a Bruin assistant coach during the 1993-1994 season. The Canyon High graduate played in three U.S. Amateur championships and was a quarterfinalist in the 1990 U.S. Public Links championships.

The Cal State Northridge men’s team signed Tim Wren of Santa Clara High and Jason Winter from Rio Mesa High.

Wren placed third in the Southern Section individual tournament at Sandpiper Golf Course last month and was the Frontier League MVP.

Winter, an All-Channel League selection, won the Ventura City Junior championship.

Baseball

Tanner Trosper and Brian Fatur of Calabasas High and Josh Persell of Montclair Prep have been selected to the Division IV All-Southern Section team.

Andrew Miller, who batted .500 with 35 runs batted in for Montclair Prep, made a commitment to Michigan.

Track and Field

Stacy Hebert of Buena High, a two-time Ventura County champion in the 300-meter low hurdles, has committed to the University of Oregon.

Hebert placed second in the 300 lows in the Southern Section Division II final last month and placed ninth in the State championships.

Warren Farlow of Kennedy High has stepped down from his position as boys’ coach after 25 years.

He will be replaced by Everett Macy, the athletic director at Cleveland and also a former track coach for the Cavaliers.

The 55-year-old Farlow, who will continue to teach and coach cross-country at Kennedy, said he no longer had the energy to be a high quality track coach.

“I’m worn out,” he said. “I’m no longer willing to do the things that I think you need to do to be a good coach in the City.”

Fencing

Brook Schaaf, Scott Gabler, Dom Yarnell, Isaac Di Ianni, Conrad Olmedo and Juan Capdet III helped Chaminade High finish sixth in the under-19 team foil and seven in team epee at the junior national championships in Cincinnati.

Olmedo placed 22nd in under-19 epee competition.

Football

Cleveland High wide receiver Alex Kalinowski has been invited to walk-on at San Diego State.

Soccer

The Las Virgenes Blazers beat the Colorado Cherry Creek Lightning, 3-0, in a Far West Regional game of the girls’ 18-under tournament in Redmond, Wash.
