A 45-year-old man was listed in serious but stable condition at a local hospital after being knocked down and then bitten more than five dozen times by two pit bull terriers, police said.

The dogs bit Gene Chen at least 67 times at about 9 p.m. Sunday as he was taking out his garbage at his home in the 20500 block of Lull Street in Canoga Park. Chen had just walked outside his house when two children opened a garage door across the street, said Sgt. Bill Maarschalk of the West Valley Division. The dogs charged Chen and attacked him.

As Chen cried out for help, neighbors worked feverishly to knock the dogs off him with sticks.

Chen, who had bites to the head and body, was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center.

When an officer from the Department of Animal Regulation showed up to take custody of the two dogs and load them into his truck, he too was bitten on the forearm, but not seriously injured, police said. The dogs were taken to the West Valley Animal Care and Control Center in Chatsworth, where they will be quarantined for 10 days and checked for rabies. After that, a hearing will be held to determine if they will be returned to their owners or destroyed, said Peter Persic, director of public relations for Department the of Animal Regulations.

The owner of the dogs was out of town and his sister was watching the animals, police said.
