Lakers, Kings Agree to Build Arena at Undetermined Site

Having agreed Friday to build a $200-million, 20,000-seat sports arena, Laker owner Jerry Buss and King owners Philip F. Anschutz and Edward P. Roski Jr. must now choose from possible sites in downtown Los Angeles or Inglewood.

Three downtown sites are under consideration, according to Bob Sanderman, the Kings’ representative on the NHL Board of Governors.

“We’re looking at property near the present Convention Center complex, a site on Union Station property and a 50-acre site adjacent to Chinatown,” he said.

Of those three, Sanderman said the Convention Center site is the leading downtown site. But Inglewood remains “very much in the running,” he added. The proposed Inglewood arena site is on Hollywood Park property.

Sanderman said the arena itself would be privately financed, but added: “If we choose a downtown site, we may need some assistance with land costs.

“We are committed to building a state-of-the-art arena,” he said. “Los Angeles is the entertainment capital of the world, and it deserves an entertainment arena that reflects that.”
